Pizza, wine grace menu at Made in Italy

The Peninsula has many destinations for authentic Neapolitan pizza, but few are both a pizzeria and wine bar, as is Made In Italy, new in downtown San Mateo. Eight pies are the menu’s centerpiece, all made from ingredients imported from Italy (including the low-gluten red Caputo flour in the dough).

After the dough rises for 36 hours, pizzas (priced from $13 to $25) are assembled, then quickly cooked in a 900-degree oven. Pie choices include the minimalist margherita, the more elaborate broccoli rabe and homemade Calabrese sausage, and the Fruitti di Mare with cherry tomatoes, calamari, mussels and prawns.

The antipasti menu includes mortadella and other Italian cured meats, burrata and prosciutto di Parma (the classic duo), and beef meatballs in marinara. Patrons not in the mood for pizza may choose from four “panuozzos” (panini).

Pizza is also for dessert. The Nutella pizza (made with Italy’s beloved hazelnut spread) is meant to be shared between two and four people, but that may be easier said than done.

At Made in Italy, wine is key. Most bottles come from Italy, although the list includes California pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon.

Seating is limited to an L-shaped bar (in front of a wine cellar backdrop) and a row of tables for two.

Burlingame

Pizzeria Delfina in Burlingame’s July farm dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday is an alfresco Stone Valley pig roast. The meal, served family style, starts with Italian sangria and shared bites and continues with fritto misto, tomato salad, fresh cured Monterey sardines and gnocchi “tricolore” before the pork. Delfina’s gelato sandwiches are for dessert. The cost is $75 per person, plus $40 for the Unti wine (and one beer) pairing.

Pacifica

Pacifica’s fifth Starbucks is in the former Straw Hat Pizza building, which underwent dramatic renovation inside and out. The global coffee empire is serving its popular menu: coffee and specialty latte drinks, grab-and-go pastries and sandwiches.

Tomato time

‘Tis the season – delicious fresh tomatoes are arriving on menus across the Peninsula.

In Palo Alto, St. Michael’s Alley features a vegetarian heirloom tomato and basil risotto, while Bistro Elan on Birch Street pairs duck confit with roasted cherry tomatoes and petrale sole with a cherry tomato salad.

Johnston’s Saltbox in San Carlos offers a “Rooftop Pomodoro” starter with heirloom tomatoes, grilled summer squash and fresh mozzarella.

Chef Chris Aquino is serving charred fennel and tomato soup with avocado butter at Viognier in San Mateo.
