Performing arts aplenty

Dance, opera, symphonic, choral and jazz music are blooming in a season that also offers outdoor, moderately-priced (and some free!) performances as well as multi-event festivals. Here's a brief sampling:

Yerba Buena Gardens Festival: The 15th anniversary season presents 100 free events, including the Dafnis Prieto Sextet (June 13), Azucar con Aché (June 18), S.F. Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band (July 4), Okinawan Folk Ensemble (July 9), Merola Opera Schwabacher Summer Concert (July 11), RAWdance (July 17-19), Pistahan (Aug. 8-9) and Brazil in the Gardens (Aug. 16).

37th San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival: Opening Friday with a special free noon performance at City Hall featuring hula companies, the month-long program celebrates the centennial of the Panama-Pacific Exposition, which brought world dance and music new to America. Emphasizing Hawaiian folklore, the festival also features Chinese, Mexican, Indian, West African, Peruvian and other ensembles.

San Francisco Opera: The summer season opens with Berlioz' grand “Les Troyens” (“The Trojans”), a six-hour spectacular, through July 1; the world premiere of Marco Tutino's “La Ciociara” (“Two Women”), based on Vittorio De Sica's 1960 film starring Sophia Loren, June 13-30; and Mozart's “The Marriage of Figaro,” from June 14-July 5.

SFJAZZ Festival: The 33rd annual event opens with jazz-R&B band Snarky Puppy on June 10-13. Highlights include Oakland-born soul singer Goapele (June 14), country music recording star Shelby Lynne (June 15), Campbell Brothers performing John Coltrane's “A Love Supreme” (June 16), John Scofield Quartet with John Medeski (June 17) and Cuban percussionist Pedrito Martinez (June 21).

San Francisco Symphony Beethoven Festival: Programming includes semi-staged performances of the composer's large-scale “Missa solemnis” and only opera, “Fidelio.” In addition to Symphonies No. 5 and 6, the Piano Fantasy and Choral Fantasy, S.F. Symphony Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas also leads a Beethoven Marathon, a repetition of a historic 1808 concert in Vienna.

Redwood Symphony: Redwood City's summer events program presents the local orchestra directed by founder Eric Kujawsky in a program of favorites from concert and movie worlds.

Opera at the Ballpark: The live HD simulcast of San Francisco Opera's production of Mozart's “The Marriage of Figaro” features conductor Patrick Summers and cast including Philippe Sly, Lisette Oropesa, Luca Pisaroni, Nadine Sierra and Kate Lindsey.

Dancers' Group: Bay Area troupe inkBoat presents “95 Rituals,” a free, site-specific, continuous performance work honoring visionary dance pioneer Anna Halprin, who is celebrating her 95th birthday on July 13.

SPF8: SAFEhouse Arts, a nonprofit supporting up-and-coming artists, presents it eighth summer performance festival of 10 programs featuring Jenni Bregman & Dancers, Kristin Damrow & Company, Paige Sorvillo, blindsight in collaboration with Violeta Luna, LV Dance Collective, Project Tremolo, Rarefied Bear, Mid to West Dance Collective, Everything All At Once, Emote Dance Theater, Blind Tiger Society, Randee Paufve, Christine Germain & Dancers, Minna Harri & Tessa Wills, and Joe Landini.

Summer at Stanford Live: The eclectic 2015 lineup includes singer-songwriter Phillip Phillips with cellist Dave Eggar (July 10), rock a cappella ensemble the House Jacks (July 19), a swing dance party with Lavay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers (July 25) and Mexican folk with Tlen Huicani and Mariachi mi Tierra Linda (July 26).

Music@Menlo: The 13th season of the nationally prominent chamber-music festival focuses on the immortal works of Franz Schubert, known as “Beethoven's successor.” Concerts, workshops, lectures, students and young professionals are part of the 100-plus events in the three-week festival.

Carmel Bach Festival: In addition to core works by J.S. Bach – such as the six Brandenburg concertos and the St. John Passion – the wide range of programs includes Haydn's “Harmoniemesse,” Mozart's “The Magic Flute” and works by Bartók, Stravinsky and Bruckner.
