Madden cocaine case ends with mistrial

A mistrial was declared Wednesday in the federal case against disgraced former San Francisco crime lab technician Deborah Madden, with only a few jurors reportedly rejecting conviction. Madden, who has admitted to taking small amounts of cocaine from samples at the lab in 2009, faced up to four years in prison on the federal charge of obtaining the drug by means of fraud, deception or subterfuge. Fight victims, suspects hold unhappy reunion at hospital

Police did not have to search very hard for these suspects. After a vicious bar brawl in the Mission district early Wednesday, both the suspects and victims were treated at San Francisco General Hospital, police said. Not long after the victims were admitted, police said, two men believed to be responsible for the attack arrived at the same hospital via a taxicab seeking treatment for their own injuries. First case of West Nile in seven years reported in San Francisco

A San Francisco man is recovering after reporting the first human case of West Nile virus contracted locally in seven years, health officials said. The unidentified man, who was recovering at home, had not traveled outside the Bay Area recently, according to a statement from the San Francisco Department of Public Health. The department said there is no way to know if the man was infected within San Francisco or a surrounding county. Read More

49ers' Smith, Moss yet to start clicking on the field

One player who could shake the 49ers out of their lackluster performance on Sunday in Minnesota is wide receiver Randy Moss. Moss returned to the place he started and caught three passes for 27 yards as the 49ers targeted him early with six passes thrown his way. But Moss could have been far more productive. Twice, quarterback Alex Smith threw high to him, including one time at the goal line. If Smith makes a better throw, Moss easily would have scored his second touchdown of the season. Read More

Suspect shot by San Francisco police officer in Mission District

A San Francisco police officer shot and wounded a suspected gang member Thursday night after the man pulled a gun on two officers in the Mission district, police said. The man was described as suffering from injuries that were not considered life-threatening and was at San Francisco General Hospital under arrest, SFPD spokesman Sgt. Michael Andraychak said.
