Cal women gets No. 2 seed, draws Fresno State

BERKELEY — After sharing the Pac-12 Conference regular-season title, the Cal women’s basketball team earned a No. 2 seed for the NCAA Tournament and a first-round date with Fresno State. “When you reflect on what on what this team has done, and where this program was years and years ago, I think it’s pretty neat that we’re on that 2-line,” said coach Lindsay Gottlieb, whose Golden Bears were a No. 8 seed the previous year, her first in Berkeley. “But right now our focus is on Fresno State. Stanford will have chance to defend NIT title

While it’s not the NCAA Tournament, the Stanford men’s basketball team will be playing in the postseason, and in a familiar setting. A year after winning the NIT, the Cardinal (18-14) will look to defend their title this time around and earn another trip back to Madison Square Garden. Coach Johnny Dawkins’ squad earned a No. 4 seed in the tournament and will host Stephen F. Austin (27-4) at Maples Pavilion on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Only two other programs have won consecutive NIT championships, St. Johns in 1943 and 1944 and South Carolina in 2005 and 2006. Read More

Fire reveals marijuana grow house in SF's Inner Sunset neighborhood

A fire in the Inner Sunset on Wednesday revealed a marijuana grow house, a situation that a city official says is an increasing problem in the western neighborhoods. The fire at the three-story house in the Windsor Terrace neighborhood was reported just after 8 a.m., according to Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White. Stanford, Cal women rake in Pac-12 media awards

The Stanford and Cal women’s basketball teams both finished the regular season ranked in the top 5 in the nation, so it came as no surprise that both were rewarded with Pac-12 Conference media awards Monday. Stanford star Chiney Ogwumike was unanimously voted as the conference’s Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, the conference unveiled. A Stanford player has won the Player of the Year honor in all four years of the media-voted awards. Read More

Unbeaten CCSF men's basketball earns top seed in tourney

The City College of San Francisco men’s basketball team was dominant in the regular season en route to racking up a perfect 28-0 record. As a result, the Rams were rewarded with the top seed in the Northern California Regional of the state tournament Monday. CCSF will open tournament play at home on Saturday at 7 p.m. against the winner of a first-round matchup between San Jose City College and De Anza College. The Rams blitzed San Jose 104-57 in the regular season, but did not face De Anza. Read More

49ers reportedly close to Alex Smith deal

It appears as if Alex Smith’s tenure in San Francisco could be over. But his new destination is still a mystery. CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora tweeted Sunday night that the 49ers have told other teams inquiring that a deal for the quarterback is “effectively complete.” The trade partner is not known, but NFL.com reported that the Kansas City Chiefs, who own the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft, seem most likely. Any trade can’t be made official until the NFL’s new league season officially begins March 12. Read More

The cable car incident that injured seven people Wednesday was caused by a bolt in the tracks that failed to trigger an alarm meant to alert operators of an obstruction, Muni officials said Thursday. The cable car on the Powell-Hyde line was headed downtown Wednesday when it struck the bolt and abruptly stopped at Powell and Washington streets about 10:15 a.m. The sudden stop injured five passengers and two Muni workers. Giants agree to terms on 2-year deal with Sergio Romo

The defending World Series champion Giants agreed to terms on a $9 million, two-year contract Wednesday with reliever Sergio Romo to avoid arbitration. Romo had filed for salary arbitration at $4.5 million, while the Giants countered at $2.675 million after he earned $1.575 million last season. Romo was the team’s last possible arbitration case as the Giants head to Arizona to open spring training next week.The deal buys out Romo’s final two years of arbitration eligibility. Read More

The 49ers will wear their red home jerseys for the Super Bowl on Feb. 3 in New Orleans, according to a report by Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. This will mark the fourth time the Niners will wear red in the Super Bowl, doing so previously in 1983, 1988 and 1994 seasons.San Francisco is the designated home team and had the choice of jersey.
