Bay Area rowers qualify for London Games

United States rowing went 3-for-3 on the first day of finals Tuesday at the 2012 Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland, qualifying a host of individuals for the London Olympics, including five with Bay Area ties. The women’s double sculls, lightweight men’s four and men’s eight won their respective finals on the Rotsee race course. The men’s eight team is stocked with Bay Area connections. Read More

Eclipse brings fire to the skies

The sun and moon aligned over the Earth in a rare astronomical event Sunday evening — an annular eclipse that dimmed the skies over parts of Asia and North America, briefly turning the sun into a blazing ring of fire. Oracle extends lead after latest race in Venice

No. 16 Stanford team ousted from playoffs

The 16th-ranked Stanford softball team was eliminated from postseason play on Sunday after dropping a 6-2 decision to No. 7 Louisiana-Lafayette as part of the Lafayette Regional. The Ragin’ Cajuns took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off Stanford’s Teagan Gerhart, who took the loss, and never looked back. Stanford scored twice in the sixth inning on singles by Maya Burns, a former St. Ignatius standout, and Danielle Miller to cut the deficit to 5-2, but that’s as close as Stanford (40-19) would get. S.F. Bulls set date for first exhibition game

The date has been set for professional hockey to officially return to San Francisco. The San Francisco Bulls, the newest addition to the ECHL, will kick off their season with an exhibition game Oct. 3 at the Cow Palace against Pacific Division foe the Stockton Thunder. It will mark the first pro hockey game at the Cow Palace since the San Francisco Spiders of the IHL played there in the 1995-96 season.
