Longtime Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell, beloved by generations of fans who grew up listening to his rich voice, Southern cadence and quirky phrases on the radio, has died after a months-long battle with cancer. He was 92.

A jury is beginning to form in the trial of the three men charged with killing San Francisco police Officer Nick-Tomasito Birco in 2006. Birco was on his way to help out with a police chase involving a suspected robber when the van the suspects were driving crashed into his patrol car, which flipped and slammed into a light pole, killing him. A Pacifica police officer was injured Thursday when a man she had stopped for a traffic violation tried to escape in his car, dragging the officer about 10 feet.
The officer pulled 49-year-old Kieran McCarty over at about 11:50 a.m. at state Highway 1 and Crespi Drive, police said.
McCarty was cooperative at first and was in the process of being cited and released for driving on a suspended license when he started his car in an attempt to flee, according to police.
The officer reached into the vehicle to try to stop McCarty from taking off, but McCarty accelerated.

A Bay Area tea party activist is saying turnabout is fair play by calling for a boycott of San Francisco after several city officials called for a boycott of Arizona following a new anti-immigration measure that was signed into law in the state last week.
Bridget Melson, founder of the Pleasanton Tea Party group, said she is calling on her members and other like-minded people to boycott San Francisco after Mayor Gavin Newsom and other city officials condemned the law earlier this week.

The city of San Francisco is entitled to charge its 14 percent hotel tax on hotel parking spaces or valet parking, according to a state appeals court.
The Court of Appeal, in a ruling issued in San Francisco on Wednesday, rejected a San Mateo County woman’s challenge to the application of the hotel tax to hotel parking.
The plaintiff in the case, Angel Batt, spent a night at the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco in 2005. She was charged $55 for parking, including a 14 percent tax of $7.70 for the service.

The Griffin Group, which is based in Orinda and focuses on beverage alcohol brands, has been working with Fritz Maytag, the longtime Anchor owner, to keep the venue in The City.
