Daniel Ellsberg — the former military analyst responsible for the infamous Pentagon Papers intelligence leak — spoke at a rally for Army Pvt. Bradley Manning held near the San Francisco Pride office on Market Street on Monday. Attendees were upset with the organization for rescinding the grand marshal appointment of Manning, who is openly gay and allegedly responsible for a major leak of U.S. intelligence to the WikiLeaks website. He is currently in a military prison. Read More

Power cable failure blows manhole cover 30 feet into the air

A power cable failure in downtown San Francisco on Friday blew two manhole covers into the air, according to PG&E. At about 11:30 a.m., the underground powerline failure caused a loud boom and sent the manholes into the air at Bush and Stockton streets. One manhole struck a rental car carrying two people. Long-awaited Devil's Slide tunnels unveiled with grand opening ceremony

Caltrans on Monday held a grand opening event to celebrate the completion of the long-awaited Devil's Slide-bypass tunnels. The ceremony was hosted by local politicians, transportation officials, and the wife and daughter of the late U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos, the Peninsula lawmaker for whom the tunnels are named. Read More

Mission District shooting victim mourned in prayer service

The Rev. Daniel Nascimento of St. Brendan Catholic Church, held a prayer service Monday morning at 20th Street and South Van Ness Avenue for 28-year-old Jose Matias-Aguilon, who was shot to death at the intersection last week. Water main break floods Sunnydale Avenue in San Francisco

A water main break opened a massive hole in the street at Sunnydale Avenue and Cora Street on Tuesday morning. Flooding left homes in the neighborhood with little to no water pressure, but it was restored by early evening, according to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. Employees at nearby Pump Repair Service said the business suffered damage when the water level outside rose above a foot. "I heard the ladies in the front office yelling, ‘Emergency!’ So I went up front and there was water flowing in the door," shop foreman Wilbur Norwood said. Read More

Worker injured in blaze at Mission construction site

An early morning fire that broke out on Lapidge Street between 18th and 19th streets in the Mission district Tuesday left one man with burns to his lower body. A roofing company worker was apparently using hot tar to attach flashing above the front door when some wood on the exterior of the building caught fire, Fire Department Battalion Chief Kirk Richardson said. The 50-year-old man was treated at the scene and released. Read More
