The median price of a home in The City was stable in August, albeit weak, according to the Controller’s Office. The median price was $635,000, a 17.5 percent drop from the previous year.
“July and August brought continuing signs of stability in residential real estate, as median prices have stayed within 5 percent of each other since March,” the city controller said in a statement.

A record 10.1 percent of San Franciscans were out of work in August, according to the latest report from the Controller’s Office.
The unemployment rate was the highest recorded since the Employment Development Department began releasing monthly data in 1990, the city department said in a statement.
The good news: Since The City has been hovering at around 10 percent for some time, “this may indicate that we are reaching a peak,” it said.

The state can now sell 23 acres of land that is mostly used for parking lots in southeastern San Francisco to benefit a city housing development.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation this week allowing the transaction.
SB 792, authored by Sen. Mark Leno, allows the state to reconfigure the boundaries of the Candlestick Point State Recreation Area so that Lennar Corp. can move ahead with a long-awaited housing and commercial development in the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard and Candlestick Point.

Mayor Gavin Newsom won’t be hanging around City Hall until at least Friday as he rides the campaign train on the East Coast.
Newsom on Monday was fundraising for the California governor’s race in Philadelphia, his campaign said. Today, he is set to take a train – “the regular Amtrak,” his campaign manager thinks – to New York to solicit more cash support.
The mayor is then scheduled Thursday to attend the UP Experience in Houston.

Newsom’s people say Brown, the mayor’s Democratic nemesis in the 2010 gubernatorial race, slept with the enemy by raising money for “rightwing Republican leaders.”

Mayor Gavin Newsom has released a beefy list of California politicians who have endorsed the mayor for governor.
Nearly 40 elected officials and Democratic party leaders are supporting Newsom’s gubernatorial bid, the campaign said.

San Francisco has received $10 million in federal stimulus funding to boost solar energy usage in The City, it was announced today.
The City was one of 16 municipalities nationwide to receive American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding for solar projects, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
The money will help eliminate financial barriers and other obstacles that stand in the way of solar installations in affordable housing buildings, public schools and untapped neighborhoods, The City said.

Only hours after a Field Poll showed Mayor Gavin Newsom largely trailing Attorney General Jerry Brown in the Democratic primary, his campaign released a statement Thursday morning highlighting the mayor’s popularity among high school and college students in the state.
More than 4,000 students statewide have joined Students for Newsom, which are essentially student-run mini-campaigns that include members from more than 50 state colleges, the Newsom campaign said. Nine hundred high school students joined the cause, it noted.

Ouch! The newest governor’s poll doesn’t look good for our mayor.
Only days after former President Bill Clinton publicly endorsed Mayor Gavin Newsom for governor, Field Research Corp. released results Thursday showing he is down 20 points to primary foe Attorney General Jerry Brown -- a deficit that has doubled since March.
Brown has not yet declared he's in the running for governor, but he launched an exploratory committee for the state's top job last week. The widely publicized launch occurred only days before Clinton attended his first Newsom fundraiser.
