Newsom is visiting the San Francisco sister city through Wednesday, reportedly meeting with business leaders and government officials while there in order to strengthen ties.

If economy-wary Bay Area residents went on a shopping diet last holiday season, this year it seems the goal is to keep that weight off.
“[The economy] is still bad,” said Warren Hong, 79, of the Richmond district, who was eating lunch in Union Square the day after Thanksgiving and watching shoppers stream in and out of the nearby Macy’s.

The holidays are a time when city crews halt roadwork on bustling commercial corridors so as not to disrupt shoppers and businesses during the height of the shopping season.
The Department of Public Works today issued a moratorium on street excavation and construction between Thursday and Jan. 3.
“During this time, DPW will not issue street excavation permits to private contractors and halts its own road construction work on busy commercial corridors,” DPW said in a statement.

There’s about to be a major divide in the satisfaction level among Muni riders.
The most dramatic overhaul to Muni’s bus and streetcar route system in 30 years is set to take effect in just 10 days and will include service reductions for some passengers and additions for others, Mayor Gavin Newsom said Tuesday at a 38-Geary bus stop near Masonic Avenue.

During a City Hall hearing Monday afternoon regarding crime on Muni, it seemed as if Supervisor Chris Daly was so bored that he might as well log onto Facebook for a bit of social networking fun.
However, a glance at Daly’s Facebook page would suggest he was less bored than fed-up with hearing the same old song about assaults, thefts, graffiti and fare evasion on buses and streetcars.
“Violence on MUNI is a real issue, but this is a useless hearing,” Daly wrote on his Facebook page.
