Vandals impair public art efforts

San Francisco artist Jason Hailey, also known as Chor Boogie, thought he had suffered enough after he was stabbed while painting a 100-foot-long mural commissioned by The City on Market Street. But after recovering from the Nov. 7 attack, Hailey returned to the Mid-Market neighborhood to finish the mural and discovered that a vandal had spray-painted a long line clear across his artwork. “I thought getting stabbed was enough,” Hailey said. Lawsuit pending regarding cig fee

Big tobacco is challenging San Francisco policies yet again. Philip Morris USA and several local retailers recently filed a complaint in San Francisco Superior Court accusing The City of violating state law when it imposed a 20-cent charge on packs of cigarettes on Oct. 1 without approval from voters. The complaint is a precursor to a lawsuit. Read More

SF: You should quit smoking this year

Did you know about 14 percent of adult San Franciscans smoke? Did you also know that the smoking rate for lesbians is 70 percent higher than that for heterosexual women? These are a sampling of facts that were recently published by city officials as part of a new quit-smoking campaign. Newsom schedule is light since he is in Hawaii

There’s a good reason why Mayor Gavin Newsom’s schedule shows he has no public appearances or meetings in The City on Monday. According to folks around City Hall, the mayor left again last week for a second holiday trip with family in Hawaii. No safety incidents in water system rebuild since April

Knock on wood, but between April and mid-December, no safety incident occurred in more than 100,000 work hours on construction projects to improve and seismically upgrade San Francisco’s water delivery system, according to a video posted on YouTube by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. SF homeowners lucky they’re not in Vegas

Homeowners in San Francisco may have had to face grueling competition when buying their lot, but at least they know that demand and value of their investment will remain relatively stable during a down economy.That can’t be said for homeowners in Las Vegas, where home prices plummeted 26.6 percent between October last year and the same month this year, according to a recent Standard & Poor’s report.Phoenix suffered an 18.1 percent slide, while Detroit, Tampa and Miami saw negative results above 14 percent, the report said. Bohemian Club gains state approval on harvesting plan

The Bohemian Club gained state approval for a hotly-contested plan to harvest timber at the exclusive campsite retreat property it owns near Monte Rio in Sonoma County. The San Francisco-based club acquired the 2,700-acre plot of forestland along the Russian River in 1872 and has been using the property to host lavish summer retreats for a highly secretive membership that includes former U.S. presidents, corporate tycoons and celebrities. Newsom: We need to clean our streets

Mayor Gavin Newsom wants to step up efforts to remove gum, glass and cigarette butts from The City’s streets in reaction to less-than-stellar results in a recent city litter audit. “We still have less litter out on the streets than we did two years ago, but the numbers started to creep up in this last audit,” Newsom said in a year-end address posted on YouTube. Renovation to revitalize Civic Center

A major green project city officials say will help revitalize the downtrodden Civic Center area and boost local employment will be spearheaded by a San Francisco company. Downtown-based Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Co. recently netted a $3.37 million contract to help renovate and modernize the 73-year-old building at 50 United Nations Plaza, which has been vacant since 2007, spokeswoman Gene Gibson said.
