San Francisco and Baltimore symphonies wager friendly social media Super Bowl war

With the Super Bowl matchup between the 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens just days away, the wagering between the cities has hit something of a fever pitch. The symphonies in Baltimore and San Francisco have started a friendly back-and-forth using social media to show pride in their hometown teams. San Francisco's annual Christmas Bird Count begins Thursday

They have long traded rifles for cameras and pencils, but the folks who will scour The City for birds this week are no less enthusiastic about their pursuits. Thursday marks the Christmas Bird Count, an annual event that started locally in 1983. Fresh & Easy locations in San Francisco could close if buyer not found

Five years after making an ambitious push into the U.S. grocery market, the future of Fresh & Easy is unclear — and that’s not good news for the communities it serves in San Francisco. On Wednesday, U.K. parent company Tesco announced that it is seeking a buyer for the grocery chain or that it could close the 200-store operation employing 5,000 people. San Francisco celebrates Muni Centennial Celebration

Muni kicked off Centennial Week on Sunday to celebrate its 100th birthday. Streetcars are rolled out on the oldest rail line, the J-Church, which opened in 1917. Next Sunday, those streetcars will travel along Muni’s newest rail line, the T-Third Street, from downtown to Cesar Chavez Street. Woman not guilty in deadly stabbing

A San Francisco jury acquitted a Potrero Terrace woman of murder charges in the stabbing death of another woman last year, the Public Defender’s Office announced Tuesday. After a nine-day trial, Maria Elena Burgos, 49, was found to have acted in self-defense when she stabbed Ernestine “Buttercup” Herron, 26, in the neck during a confrontation on a street in the housing projects where both women lived, according to the defense.
