As many opportunities as Lincoln High School’s boys’ soccer team created in the first half of the Academic Athletic Association semifinals against Washington, it was a sparkling individual performance that punched the Mustangs’ ticket to the championship game.
Lincoln junior forward Felipe Herrera’s goal in the 57th minute put the Mustangs ahead 2-1, and Lincoln held on to win on Tuesday at Boxer Stadium.

Even after a dismal first half, Sacred Heart Cathedral seized momentum on the road against Serra when the Irish cut the Padres’ lead to 20-14 late in the third quarter.
Seconds later, Serra superstar Erich Wilson ripped the momentum back, and the Padres cruised to a 35-14 West Catholic Athletic League football win.
Wilson took the ensuing kickoff 99 yards to set a school record with 39 career touchdowns, then scored again on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter to put the Irish away.

When watching Urban School’s Evan Chang playing for the Blues on the volleyball court, you can’t help but notice his talent, but something seems off.
Undoubtedly the best player in the program’s five-year history, Chang regularly plays out of position for the Blues, but is actually one of the best high school liberos in the Bay Area.
Chang was rewarded for that talent with a recent verbal commitment to BYU, a three-time national champion and consistently one of the best Division I volleyball teams in the nation.

Outside of The City’s center stage at Kezar Stadium, the presence of Friday night lights in San Francisco is a foreign idea.
That will change this week, when St. Ignatius will host its second night game in school history against West Catholic Athletic League cross-town rival Riordan.
“So much in high school football is experience-based,” said St. Ignatius athletic director John Mulkerrins. “At SI, we’re so used to Saturday [afternoons] and that’s a great experience too, but this will accentuate the experience for players, fans and anyone who loves high school football.”

The PAL Ocean Division will be on the line when these two square off. Half Moon Bay has turned it around after a slow nonleague slate and can clinch the title outright with a win. An Aragon win forces a shared title.

After an 0-4 start in nonleague play, Carlmont looks to complete an unlikely run to the PAL Lake title. Led by tight end-defensive end E.J. Jimenez, El Camino can earn a share of the Lake title with a victory.

Sacred Heart Cathedral’s girls’ volleyball team played stellar defense all night against visiting rival St. Ignatius in the West Catholic Athletic League playoffs, and the deciding fifth game was no exception.
With the score tied at 7-7 in the fifth, two consecutive blocks from junior outside hitter Sarah Jones sparked a 5-0 Irish run that was ultimately the difference in a 25-18, 21-25, 25-14, 24-26, 15-10 win.
The Irish combined for 14 blocks in the match, led by a match-high six from freshman Madison Murtagh, and got stellar play from their back row.

Lincoln High School’s Kristi Wong has a chance to do something that has only happened once in Academic Athletic Association girls’ golf history.
After winning her second consecutive AAA championship with a 12-over 82 on Monday at Lincoln Park Golf Course, the junior will be the favorite to win a third title next season.
The AAA’s only three-time champion was Lowell’s Katrina Delen-Briones, who won titles in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
“It feels really good and I’m really proud of it,” Wong said. “Next year, I got it.”

The Wildcats dropped another gut-wrenching game at home, this time a 38-35 West Catholic Athletic League loss to St. Francis, and it came down to one play.
After St. Ignatius (2-5-1, 0-4-1 WCAL) took a 35-31 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run from fullback Dom Truoccolo with 1:34 remaining in the game, St. Francis (4-4, 3-2) drove down to the Wildcats 25-yard line with just over 30 seconds to play.

Top-seeded Gateway High School cruised to a 5-2 win over Bay, while second-seeded International got a scare against Leadership, holding the Griffins off in a 2-0 win.
The two teams will meet in the BCL Central title game for the third consecutive year Thursday night at Kezar Stadium.

Archbishop Riordan High School’s football team is getting better. It’s just hard to see against the West Catholic Athletic League’s best teams.
The Crusaders limited a potent Serra offense to 284 yards, but familiar problems with their young offense led to a 35-10 loss Saturday at Archbishop Riordan High School.
The Riordan (1-6, 0-4) offensive line struggled throughout and allowed sophomore quarterback Zach Masoli to be sacked seven times, stalling any momentum gained by the Crusaders’ defense. Riordan was also hampered by penalties, committing 10 for 107 yards.

Dominance is a term bandied about in sports, but no other word better describes what Mission High School’s defense did to Galileo on Thursday.
The Bears held Galileo to 85 total yards, forced eight turnovers and returned three interceptions for touchdowns in a 66-6 Academic Athletic Association win at Kezar Stadium.
“I was really surprised about the outcome,” Mission coach Joe Albano said. “Since [our first game against] Tomales, we’ve been going slowly downhill, so we’re trying to get back up.”
