Mission High outlasts Lincoln to win AAA title in 3 OT thriller

For a league that has a history of frenetic play, this season’s Academic Athletic Association boys’ basketball championship may have even out-crazied that reputation. In three overtimes, Mission High School simply out-hustled Lincoln to claim a 78-71 win and its second straight AAA-San Francisco Section title. Outsized at almost every position, most notably against Lincoln’s 6-foot-7 junior Seth Snoddy, the Bears outrebounded the Mustangs 51-46 and won the final overtime period 9-2. Read More

Success comes in different forms for Lincoln and Mission high schools

The Academic Athletic Association-S.F. Section boys’ basketball championship tonight won’t be a clash of style as much as it will be a game of matchups and personnel — strength and weaknesses. Both teams have employed fast-paced offensive and defensive schemes this season, but Lincoln’s strength is based inside — with 6-foot-7 junior center Seth Snoddy and bulky, athletic forward Da’vion Telfor — while fourth-seeded Mission’s resides on the perimeter, with two of the best scoring guards in The City in seniors Kevin Murray and Antoine Porter. University’s matchup with St. Joseph Notre Dame of Alameda on Saturday at Albany High School will be the seventh time the two teams have played in the last four seasons. Read More

Upstart Galileo girls look to dethrone Lowell in AAA title game

Labeling the Academic Athletic Association girls’ basketball championship a David-versus-Goliath matchup might be underselling the history of both programs in the title game. The difference between top-seeded Lowell and third-seeded Galileo, in terms of winning league titles, is stark. Read More

Galileo girls’ basketball climbs out of early hole, will meet Lowell for city title

The Washington High School girls’ basketball team built an early lead against Galileo in the Academic Athletic Association semifinals on Tuesday by hitting jump shots, but the well ran dry in the second half. Against Galileo’s 2-3 zone defense, the Eagles scored 18 points on outside jump shots and led for most of the first half, but shot 0-for-12 from 3-point range after halftime, allowing the Lions to claim a 56-53 victory at Kezar Pavilion. Washington High School football coach Taylan Plasch won’t be back

Washington High School football coach Taylan Plasch
According to Washington High School athletic director Lawrence Chan, Taylan Plasch will not be returning to coach the school’s varsity football team next season. Washington has opened the position up to San Francisco Unified School District faculty and is currently interviewing potential candidates to replace Plasch, but has not opened the position up to off-campus coaches yet. Also a physical education teacher at Washington, Plasch was the coach at the school for just one season, in which the Eagles had a 2-7 record, finished in a fifth-place tie in the Read More

Riordan High School senior Zac Contreras

Mercy win keeps its CCS streak intact

This year’s edition of the Mercy High School girls’ basketball team hasn’t quite lived up to the program’s recent standard of putting together 20-win seasons, but it extended an impressive streak nonetheless on Thursday night. With a 49-42 win over visiting Half Moon Bay in the Central Coast Section Division IV playoffs, the seventh-seeded Skippers have now won a CCS tournament game in nine consecutive seasons. Read More

New Open Division aims to limit CCS championships won by WCAL schools

With one not-so-simple decision in May, the Central Coast Section completely changed the landscape of its playoffs and the changes have a clear objective — limiting the amount of championships the West Catholic Athletic League can win. Based on a proposal by the section’s Basketball Advisory Committee, which is composed of coaches, this year will be the first season the CCS will employ an Open Division playoff system in both boys’ and girls’ basketball, and the tournament begins Friday night. Galileo boy's basketball uses magic at home for victory over Lincoln

galileo, lincoln
The public-school gyms in San Francisco are more utilitarian than they are glamorous and that makes winning on the road that much tougher in the Academic Athletic Association. The Lincoln boys’ basketball team became the second league opponent in just over a week to find out just how hard it is to win at Galileo on Thursday, dropping its first AAA game of the season, a 49-48 decision. Gateway’s defense clamps down on Bay School boy's basketball

Axavier Byrd
The Bay School boys’ basketball team largely accomplished its main objective on Tuesday against Gateway by limiting the Gators’ standout frontcourt with a stingy 2-3 zone, but the Breakers couldn’t limit it on defense. The Gators held Bay to 26 percent shooting from the floor, and combined with 11 blocks, limited the Breakers to a season-low point total in their 50-34 Bay Counties League Central win. Read More

James Gurr saves day for Lincoln High boy's basketball

The Lincoln boys’ basketball team went from anguish to elation in about 4 seconds on the road Tuesday against Marshall. Trailing by a point with 5 seconds left on the clock, Lincoln senior guard James Gurr inbounded the ball to junior forward Davion Telfor at the right-hand elbow and sprinted toward the basket. Telfor then hit the cutting senior with a pass and Gurr made a tough, contested layup while being fouled with a second remaining to give the Mustangs a roller-coaster 76-75 Academic Athletic Association win. St. Ignatius seizes Bruce-Mahoney trophy

The St. Ignatius boys’ basketball team’s defensive strategy against rival Sacred Heart Cathedral in front of a capacity crowd at USF on Tuesday was simple. Let the Irish shoot. The Wildcats sagged off the Irish and let them take open looks on the perimeter, and the strategy worked, allowing St. Ignatius to take back the Bruce-Mahoney trophy with a 56-46 win. Read More

Stanford jumps out to quick lead, grabs first Rose Bowl win since ’72

After a 14-point flourish to start the game, the Stanford offense went stagnant in the 99th Rose Bowl against Wisconsin. But the Cardinal leaned on its most reliable commodity to secure its first Rose Bowl victory since 1972. The Stanford defense, which came into the game as the third-best in the nation at stopping the run, held the Big Ten Conference champions scoreless and to 82 yards of total offense in the second half to seal a 20-14 win. Sacred Heart Cathedral's Courtney Wong leads All-City girls' volleyball team

Courtney Wong
It may have been a relatively down year for city volleyball as a whole, but it wasn’t a down year for Sacred Heart Cathedral, and that is reflected in The San Francisco Examiner and SanFranPreps.com All-City girls’ volleyball team. Headlining the list is the Player of the Year, Sacred Heart standout outside hitter Courtney Wong. The 5-foot-9 senior led the Irish in kills, but was also one of their best back-row defenders, along with first-team selection Amanda Lee, inarguably the best libero in San Francisco. Read More
