SAN JOSE — The Leland High School baseball team upset top-seeded Willow Glen in the quarterfinal round of the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs, but may have run into the division’s best team, despite seed, in the semifinals Thursday at Municipal Stadium.
Fifth-seeded St. Ignatius scored six runs in the first inning, three runs in the second and closed the game out in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI double from Nick Johnson that sealed the 10-0 mercy-rule win over the eighth-seeded Chargers.

The Lowell High School girls’ soccer team has been put on probation for four years by the San Francisco Section.
The sanction was originally reported by the Twitter feed of The Lowell, the school’s newspaper, and has been confirmed by Lowell athletic director Rob Ray and S.F. Section commissioner Don Collins.
According to multiple sources involved, the disciplinary action stems from the moments after the Cardinals’ 8-0 win over Washington in the Academic Athletic Association championship game on Saturday at Boxer Stadium.

A six-run second inning gave the Lowell High School softball team an early lead over rival Washington in the S.F. Section-Academic Athletic Association championship game on Tuesday in front of a standing-room-only crowd at San Francisco State University.
But when the Eagles got back in the game, Lowell junior first baseman Majenta Strongheart provided some much-needed breathing room that proved to be the difference in the Cardinals’ 8-7 win to clinch their second consecutive AAA title.

You likely won’t find Washington High School baseball coach Rob Fung in a more emotional state than where he was on Saturday, standing in the middle of the infield at AT&T Park.
Despite a largely anticlimactic finish to the Eagles’ 10-0 mercy-rule win over Balboa to clinch their second straight San Francisco Section-Academic Athletic Association championship, Fung stood on the infield grass watching his team run around the outfield with the championship trophy, silently taking it all in.

Due to an oversight by the St. Ignatius athletic department, the school’s swim team was forced to forfeit two wins, two of its best swimmers were deemed ineligible for the rest of the season and were not allowed to compete in the West Catholic Athletic League trials and finals this past weekend.
One swimmer from the boys’ team and another from the girls’ team competed in the National Club Swimming Association Junior Nationals in Orlando, Fla. in late March, but that alone was not what caused the infraction.

On a scorecard, Balboa High School senior Alex Arnold’s groundout to second base in the second inning of the San Francisco Section-Academic Athletic Association baseball semifinals looks routine, but it’s the kind of groundout that makes coaches gush.
It was also the difference in Balboa’s 1-0 upset win over Lowell on Thursday at Big Rec.
After a leadoff double by junior Jeremy Wong, only one of two Balboa hits in the game, Arnold hit a textbook grounder to Lowell second baseman Nick Magyari, allowing Wong to get to third with one out.

Marshall High School baseball coach Gerald Rankin has said it for many years.
All he wants for his players is the respect of the rest of the Academic Athletic Association, but the Phoenix had to earn it.
With a 3-2 win over Galileo on Tuesday at Moscone Recreation Center, Marshall became the first team from the B Division to defeat an A Division squad since the AAA employed a tiered-division format in 2008.

Hits weren’t plentiful in the Academic Athletic Association play-in game between Burton High School and Mission on Monday at Silver Terrace, so the Pumas had to get creative.
Trailing 1-0 with just one hit through three innings, Burton right fielder Thomas Tsang worked a walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Then Burton’s No. 4 hitter, Austin Perez, put a picture-perfect bunt single down the third-base line to score Tsang and shift the momentum in a 6-2 Burton win, which gives the Pumas their first playoff berth since 2008.

The Giants’ day off Monday presented a perfect time to look back at the first month of the season for a club that is not short on story lines.
It’s a surprise to no one that the highlight for the club has been the pitching rotation, but the names associated with early success were not necessarily expected, based on last year’s performances.
Barry Zito has been the biggest surprise and leads all starters with a 1.67 earned run average. At this time last year, he was out of the rotation with a 6.23 ERA and finished the year at the 5.87 mark.
