In 1975, I advocated that San Francisco build an indoor arena in the area where the Moscone Center is now. The arena would have accommodated the Warriors and an NHL team. A commission appointed to study the plan voted it down by a one-vote margin.
So, the Warriors stayed in Oakland. The NHL team eventually wound up in San Jose, where it has thrived as the Sharks.
Now, new Warriors owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber are proposing to build a grand new arena on the Embarcadero; Lacob has taken the reins on this project, as he has with the team.

Allen Barra remembers the exact moment that eventually spurred him to write “Mickey and Willie,” when he was a young boy in New Jersey. “I got a Topps package of baseball cards which had both Mantle and Mays in it,” he said, in a telephone conversation. “I thought it was a natural pairing, and I still do.”

There is one element the experts ignored in analyzing the second-round playoff series between the San Antonio Spurs and Warriors: The Spurs are an old team on probably their last run with Tim Duncan and the Warriors are a young, improving team.

Tim Lincecum’s seeming return to form had been good news for the Giants’ rotation, but then Lincecum regressed, giving up five runs in five innings to Arizona on Wednesday night, though the Giants rallied to win the game.
So as the Giants head into an important series against the Dodgers at AT&T Park this weekend, their only reliable starter is Madison Bumgarner.

On a night that made a mockery of all the draft projections, the Raiders and 49ers both used trades to achieve their objective.
The Raiders were first to make a move, trading their No. 3 pick to the Miami Dolphins and moving back to No. 12 but also picking up the Dolphins’ second-round pick, making up for the one they had given up in the Carson Palmer trade.

Because of the way they’ve been run the last few years, the 49ers and Raiders will face very different scenarios in this year’s NFL Draft, which begins Thursday.
Adroit personnel moves have netted the 49ers extra draft picks, so they’ll have 13 to use or trade for future usage. Their first round pick is next-to-last, but trading Alex Smith to Kansas City netted them the Chiefs’ second-round pick, second in that round, so they’ll have two picks in four choices in that segment.

Before the Giants started their burst of long-term contracts to Matt Cain and Buster Posey, plus a four-year, $40 million contract for Angel Pagan, it would have seemed that Tim Lincecum and Pablo Sandoval were likely to receive long-term contracts. But now, both come with big question marks.

In an era when teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels are trying to buy success, the Giants have partially returned to an earlier era, developing stars from their farm system.

Have the Giants regained their spot as the No. 1 team in the Bay Area and Northern California? You might think so if you go to a Giants game at AT&T Park. But then, you’d change your mind if you went to a 49ers game at Candlestick.

As general manager Reggie McKenzie tries to resurrect the Raiders, he faces a double challenge, from the fans who believed the Al Davis legend and the local media who don’t seem to understand the situation.

As significant player movement began at the start of NFL free agency, the good news is that the 49ers have general manager Trent Baalke, who knows what’s happening around the league, and an owner in Jed York who knows the importance of having that kind of man in charge.
Baalke’s expertise was evident when he was able to snatch wide receiver Anquan Boldin in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens, giving up only a sixth-round draft pick, because he knew the Ravens had serious salary cap issues.

The sports world’s biggest crapshoot, the NCAA Tournament, starts this month, so we can expect the usual media outpouring about brackets.
I use the word crapshoot both literally and symbolically. The NCAA Tournament first became big because its counterpart, the NIT, was caught up in a point-shaving scandal and it has since thrived on gambling, both professional and amateur. And, as a way to determine the best team in the country, it is hopelessly flawed.

Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum are only five months apart in age — Lincecum will be 29 in May, Cain in October — but they are worlds apart in personality.
This was obvious five years ago when the Giants hosted a media lunch at a bar/restaurant across the site from where Seals Stadium had stood in 1958 when the Giants played their first season in San Francisco.

New Cal football coach Sonny Dykes has shown a sensitivity to his new home by trying to immerse himself and his team in campus life.
The most recent example: The team, at Dykes’ suggestion, attended the Cal-UCLA basketball game at Haas Pavilion, cheering the Bears to an upset victory. “I’m trying to get the players involved in student activities, not just sports,” he said, while meeting with media. “I’ve told them, ‘They support you by coming to the games, so you should support them, too.” They enjoyed the basketball game, probably more than they expected to.”

For Lou Spadia, who died over the weekend shortly after his 92nd birthday, 1977 was what he called “the worst year of my life.” The love of his life, his wife, died of cancer, and he would never remarry. The other “love of his life,” the 49ers, were being demolished by general manager Joe Thomas, who had told Spadia not to come to the office.
A lesser man would have crumbled. Spadia fought back, implementing a longtime dream of raising money for youth sports by founding the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, in conjunction with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce.
