Don’t count the Warriors out just yet

Golden State Warriors
Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals between the Warriors and San Antonio Spurs had everything from drama to insanity to disaster. Once the dust settled, the question some were bandying about was whether the Warriors could bounce back after letting such a huge chance slip through their fingers. But let’s hold off on the sky-is-falling rhetoric for just a second. Read More

49ers will face off against Alex Smith, Kansas City Chiefs in preseason

san francisco 49ers
The 49ers won’t have to wait long to get a glimpse at former quarterback Alex Smith. The NFL announced preseason schedules Thursday, and the 49ers will take a trip to Kansas City in the second week of the preseason to face Smith and his new team the Chiefs. After Colin Kaepernick took over for the injured Smith midseason in 2012, he sparked the 49ers on a run that ended with a loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl. Smith was then traded to the Chiefs for draft picks in the offseason. Read More

Tim Lincecum a giant question entering first start of year

tim lincecum
The hoopla surrounding Opening Day is unparalleled and the electricity pulsating from AT&T Park this weekend for the home opener will be second to none. But from a pure baseball perspective, the most intriguing game of this opening week will be today, when Tim Lincecum will take the hill to close out the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.   Lincecum, entering his last year under contract, is coming off a disastrous season in which he posted a career-worst 10-15 record with a 5.18 ERA. That was followed by a 10.57 spring ERA. Read More

When it comes to Tiger Woods, it’s majors or bust

Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer Invitational
Tiger Woods won for the third time this season Monday when he captured the Arnold Palmer Invitational trophy, his eighth time winning the event. The victory led every news organization to ask the most obvious and overstated question: Is he back? The topic is dredged up every time Tiger makes a birdie putt or even sniffs the top of a PGA Tour leaderboard. Tiger himself has repeatedly stated the standard he holds himself to is winning major championships. Anything less is failure. Read More

Anquan Boldin makes Niners better, but defense still needs work

Anquan Boldin
Hold on, wasn’t the NFL’s new league season, aka Christmas morning on 5-Hour Energy, supposed to start today at 1 p.m.? Judging by the flurry of activity Monday, it seems like NFL teams didn’t get the memo. And once again, the 49ers were right in the middle of it. Just weeks after being the first team to jump into the mix by agreeing to ship quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Niners kept up the wheeling and dealing. Read More

49ers elect not to use franchise designation on Pro Bowler Dashon Goldson

Dashon Goldson
The NFC champion 49ers could be in the market for a new starting safety. San Francisco elected not to place the franchise tag on two-time Pro Bowler Dashon Goldson before Monday’s deadline to do so, making the hard-hitting safety an unrestricted free agent when the new league calendar begins March 12. Goldson has expressed a desire for a long-term contract after he earned $6.2 million under the franchise tag during the 49ers’ run to the Super Bowl. Placing the tag on Goldson again would have cost the Niners $7.45 million next season. Read More

Eleven S.F. high schools part of state basketball tournament

Eleven San Francisco high schools are part of the Northern California bracket of the CIF State Basketball Championships, though none were selected to compete in the newly formed and controversial Open Division. The CIF unveiled brackets on Sunday and the Sacred Heart Cathedral boys and girls were both handsomely rewarded. The boys garnered NorCal’s top seed in Division III, earned a first-round bye and will host the winner of San Marin (Novato) and Casa Roble (Orangevale) on Saturday. Read More

Eventually, Warriors will need a healthy and productive Andrew Bogut

Another week, another Andrew Bogut injury. It seems to be a broken record at this point for the Warriors. Golden State’s oft-injured center didn’t travel with the team as it kicked off a five-game road trip Sunday, since he’s battling back spasms caused by a protruding disk. Since he went down with this latest injury, all the Warriors have done is beat the San Antonio Spurs for the first time since 2008 and rally past the Minnesota Timberwolves for a tough road win. Giants would be wise to consider Barry Zito beyond 2013

barry zito
For years, this was the season frustrated Giants fans had counted down to. The final year of the albatross of a contract Barry Zito signed prior to the 2007 season. All these years later, it’s still tough to mention Zito in any sentence without also bringing up the hefty $126 million deal he inked. And as Zito piled up disappointing year after disappointing year, it seemed inevitable his Giants tenure would be over the second the clock struck midnight after this season. Read More

Baltimore Ravens soaking up Super Bowl glory

joe flacco, disney world
NEW ORLEANS — Groggy and functioning on an hour and a half of sleep, the magnitude of what he accomplished just hours prior still hadn’t sunk in for Joe Flacco on Monday morning. Add in receiving a brand-new shiny Corvette for winning MVP honors of the Super Bowl, and it’s easy to understand why it all seems like a dream for the 28-year-old. Read More

Defensive lapses stacked up for 49ers

san francisco 49ers
NEW ORLEANS — For the majority of the season, it was the backbone of the 49ers. The consistent phase of the team that would show up week in and week out. But down the stretch, the 49ers’ defense, particularly the pass defense, showed its vulnerability and it ultimately caught up to them in Super Bowl XLVII. Through the first 13 games of the regular season, the Niners were allowing 14.2 points per game. Their final six, which includes the three postseason games? That number skyrocketed up to 29.7. Turn out the lights; Niners no longer perfect in Super Bowl

NEW ORLEANS – The lights went out on Super Bowl XLVII early in the second half, and for the 49ers, their electricity came to life just a little too late. As a result, for the first time in its storied history, San Francisco was left with the bitter taste of defeat on the NFL’s grandest stage. MVP Joe Flacco threw for 287 yards and three first-half touchdowns and the Baltimore Ravens held off a furious second-half rally from the Niners to capture the franchise’s second Super Bowl title 34-31 on Sunday. Blackout at Superdome adds to Super Bowl wild night

superdome, super bowl
NEW ORLEANS — A city and stage known for its pomp and circumstance went dark at one of the worst times possible. The Superdome experienced a power outage that caused a 34-minute delay in the third quarter of Sunday’s Super Bowl, putting pause on the nation’s biggest sporting event. It also knocked the CBS broadcast team of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms off the air temporarily. The majority of the lights in the cavernous 70,000-plus-seat stadium went out at 13:22 of the third quarter before play resumed. Read More
