The 49ers won’t have to wait long to get a glimpse at former quarterback Alex Smith.
The NFL announced preseason schedules Thursday, and the 49ers will take a trip to Kansas City in the second week of the preseason to face Smith and his new team the Chiefs.
After Colin Kaepernick took over for the injured Smith midseason in 2012, he sparked the 49ers on a run that ended with a loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl. Smith was then traded to the Chiefs for draft picks in the offseason.

But from a pure baseball perspective, the most intriguing game of this opening week will be today, when Tim Lincecum will take the hill to close out the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The NFC champion 49ers could be in the market for a new starting safety.
San Francisco elected not to place the franchise tag on two-time Pro Bowler Dashon Goldson before Monday’s deadline to do so, making the hard-hitting safety an unrestricted free agent when the new league calendar begins March 12.
Goldson has expressed a desire for a long-term contract after he earned $6.2 million under the franchise tag during the 49ers’ run to the Super Bowl. Placing the tag on Goldson again would have cost the Niners $7.45 million next season.

Eleven San Francisco high schools are part of the Northern California bracket of the CIF State Basketball Championships, though none were selected to compete in the newly formed and controversial Open Division.
The CIF unveiled brackets on Sunday and the Sacred Heart Cathedral boys and girls were both handsomely rewarded.
The boys garnered NorCal’s top seed in Division III, earned a first-round bye and will host the winner of San Marin (Novato) and Casa Roble (Orangevale) on Saturday.

Golden State’s oft-injured center didn’t travel with the team as it kicked off a five-game road trip Sunday, since he’s battling back spasms caused by a protruding disk.

NEW ORLEANS — A city and stage known for its pomp and circumstance went dark at one of the worst times possible.
The Superdome experienced a power outage that caused a 34-minute delay in the third quarter of Sunday’s Super Bowl, putting pause on the nation’s biggest sporting event. It also knocked the CBS broadcast team of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms off the air temporarily.
The majority of the lights in the cavernous 70,000-plus-seat stadium went out at 13:22 of the third quarter before play resumed.
