Two men shot dead on freeway after Warriors game

Two men who apparently were Golden State Warriors fans were killed after the basketball team's playoff game Thursday night when a gunman opened fire on their Porsche on Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland, authorities said. The victims were traveling north on Highway 880 in the slow lane near the Jackson Street exit when someone in a dark-colored SUV fired several shots into their car at 10:36 p.m. Thursday, California Highway Patrol spokesman Sam Morgan said. Group arrested in SFSU scuffle connected with squatters evicted from church

A group involved in a scuffle with San Francisco State University police Thursday night was part of a squatter's collective that was evicted from an abandoned church in the city earlier this week, according to a statement from a member of the group. An SFSU police officer was injured and several people were arrested in the confrontation Thursday night when police sought to remove alleged trespassers from a dormitory, according to a university spokeswoman. Ex-psychiatrist William Ayres pleads no contest to charges of molesting boys

After years of legal wrangling, Dr. William Ayres, an 81-year-old former San Mateo psychiatrist accused of molesting boys during examinations in the 1990s, admitted to the charges against him Thursday. A wheelchair-bound Ayres pleaded no contest to eight felony molestation charges just four days into jury selection in his second trial in San Mateo County Superior Court. His first trial ended in a hung jury and a mistrial in 2009. Read More

Victim fatally shot this afternoon in Bayview

Police are investigating a fatal shooting in San Francisco's Bayview District this afternoon. Officers responded at 3:43 p.m. to reports that a male victim had been shot in the 1100 block of Hudson Avenue, Officer Carlos Manfredi said. The officers performed CPR on the victim until medics arrived and transported him to San Francisco General Hospital. However, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, Manfredi said. Peninsula fire chief recovering after fall, back surgery

A Peninsula fire chief who leads a task force of a nationally recognized search and rescue team is recovering from back surgery after falling at his San Jose home over the weekend. Menlo Park Fire Protection District Chief Harold Schapelhouman was injured when he fell while doing yard work at his home Saturday, a fire dispatcher said. Schapelhouman underwent an 11-hour surgery on Monday and “came through it well,” the dispatcher said. Read More

South City police search for masked vandal who lit car on fire

South San Francisco police are hunting for a person who smashed the window of a car and lit it on fire early Tuesday morning. Witnesses say that just after midnight a person wearing a black hoodie and a mask used a brick to smash the window before throwing a lit container with flammable liquid inside, police said. The suspect then fled in a white four-door sedan. The fire in a neighborhood near U.S. Highway 101 and Sister Cities Boulevard did not injure anyone. Read More

Man accused of killing wife for insurance

A Woodside man who is on trial for allegedly murdering his wife to cash in on $30 million worth of insurance money admitted he faced financial ruin in the days before her death. Pooroushash “Peter” Parineh, 67, took the witness stand Monday in his own defense in San Mateo County Superior Court. Parineh said his real estate holdings before 2007 were worth an estimated $150 million, but by early 2010, they were worth only a few million dollars. Five properties — including the family home in an exclusive neighborhood in Woodside — were in foreclosure, Parineh said. Read More

Bid to bring Super Bowl to Bay has raised $30M and counting

Organizers of a bid to have the 49ers host Super Bowl L in 2016 announced Monday that they have already raised more than $30 million for the event and will contribute a quarter of that total to local charities. Members of the Bay Area Super Bowl Bid Committee made the announcement as they prepare to make a presentation to the 32 NFL owners at a meeting in Boston on May 21. The committee last week submitted its bid to the owners to have the Super Bowl at the 49ers’ new $1.2 billion stadium in Santa Clara in 2016. Read More

Fund started for victims of fatal limo fire

The nursing community has set up a fund to help the families of five women who were killed in a fiery crash on the San Mateo Bridge this month as they headed to a bridal party in Foster City. The California Nurses Association and National Nurses United have established the CNA Nursing Angels Family Fund to which anyone can make a donation to benefit the families of the women who died while celebrating the marriage of Neriza Fojas, 31, of Monterey. The former Bay Area resident was a nurse at the Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. Read More

AT&T Park workers approve strike as negotiations continue

When contract talks continue this week between AT&T Park workers and the company that manages the concessions at the ballpark, it will be under the cloud of a threatened strike approved over the weekend. The concession workers, who are represented by the union Unite Here Local 2, have said they had not had raises in several years. They said  the management company Centerplate is seeking to cap health care benefits and is offering a 25-cent-an-hour raise this year and another 25 cents an hour next year. Read More

Funeral set for Millbrae vice mayor who served on council since 1999

A funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday for Nadia Holober, the Millbrae vice mayor who passed away last week from cancer. Holober worked for the city for 14 years after she moved with her family to Millbrae in 1991. She was first elected to the City Council in 1999 and served as mayor in 2003 and 2004. She was elected to her third term on the council in 2009, after which she worked her second term as vice mayor. She was working  up until her death, city officials said. She is survived by her husband, Richard, and her sons, Ruben and Evan. Read More

Police ask for help in finding suspect in Pacifica skateboard assault

Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a suspect who beat and seriously injured a driver after a car crash in Pacifica last month. Police said officers responded to reports of the assault at the Fairmont Shopping Center, off of Hickey Boulevard, around 11:55 p.m. on April 27. The victim and suspect had been involved in a car crash on southbound state Highway 35 near Hickey Boulevard prior to the assault, according to police. Read More

A large sinkhole that appeared Monday in the Presidio Heights neighborhood will likely take the rest of the week to repair, a spokesman for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission said Tuesday. The sinkhole, which is about 20 feet in diameter and 10 feet deep, was reported about 5 p.m. Monday at Lake Street and Second Avenue, SFPUC spokesman Tyrone Jue said. Investigators believe the sinkhole occurred when a 19-inch brick sewer line below the roadway ruptured, Jue said. Crews estimate that the line is at least 100 years old, he said. Read More

California high court says municipalities can ban medical marijuana dispensaries

The California Supreme Court ruled unanimously Monday that cities and counties have the right to ban medical marijuana dispensaries within their borders, despite the existence of a state law that protects patients who use the drug. The court said the scope of the voter-approved Compassionate Use Act of 1996, or Proposition 215, and a related 2003 state law is “limited and circumscribed” and does not prevent local governments from prohibiting marijuana dispensaries. Visitacion Valley stabber sought

Police said they are searching for a woman who stabbed her roommate about 4:15 a.m. Sunday in the first block of Towerside Avenue in Visitacion Valley. When officers arrived, they reportedly found a woman suffering from a stab wound. She was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to survive, according to police. The suspect, who’s also a woman and the victim’s roommate, fled the scene and remained at large Sunday, police said. Read More
