A series of powerful rainstorms is expected to hit the Bay Area beginning Wednesday morning, dumping up to 8 inches of rain on parts of the region, a National Weather Service forecaster said.
The storms will start around the time of the morning commute Wednesday and continue through the weekend, bringing winds of 40 to 50 mph and 1 to 3 inches of rain to most parts of the Bay Area, forecaster Steve Anderson said.
“This is certainly the biggest storm of the season so far,” Anderson said. “Typically, we get our big rain events in December and January.”

As the temperature drops, a number of winter shelters throughout the Bay Area are opening up to accommodate homeless people, keeping them safe on cold and rainy nights.
The San Francisco Interfaith Council offers shelter services throughout the winter.
St. Mark’s Lutheran Church at 1031 Franklin St. opened Sunday, serving as many as 65 people daily and providing dinner and breakfast. The shelter closes Dec. 8. Service runs from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

A group of nudists filed a lawsuit Wednesday in federal court seeking to stop the Board of Supervisors from passing an ordinance next week that would ban nudity in The City.
The supervisors are set to vote Tuesday on a proposal by Supervisor Scott Wiener that would prohibit the display of genitals or buttocks in city plazas or parklets. The ban also would apply to sidewalks, streets and public transit.

The San Francisco Fire Department responded to reports of smoke in City Hall tonight, a dispatcher said.
Firefighters were called to City Hall at 9:26 p.m. on reports of smoke and arrived to find that the building's sprinkler system had been activated. The smoke had come from a problem with an electrical panel, according to fire officials, and PG&E crews were called to the scene.
Minimal fire units remain there tonight. Any fire was handled by the sprinklers, according to the Fire Department.

The condition of a Burlingame man injured in a shooting outside a Halloween party at Fort Mason last week has improved, according to police.
Now police are searching for photos or video of the Oct. 28 incident, in which 21-year-old Ben Pessah was shot as he was leaving a party with his girlfriend, Carissa Harper, 20, and two other people.
Suspect Hun Saelee, 30, of San Leandro allegedly grabbed Harper’s chest and tried to start a fight, Harper said. He eventually grabbed a gun out of the trunk of his car and allegedly shot Pessah in the head as he ran away.

Two women accused of starting a fight at a baseball game that ended with an injury to a 60-year-old woman were acquitted late last week after witnesses gave muddled and conflicting accounts of what happened, according to the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office.
A jury on Thursday acquitted San Francisco resident Brianna Chamorro, 19, and San Bruno resident Amber Hanna, 19, after a day of deliberations, according to Chamorro’s defense attorney, Deputy Public Defender Edward Mario.

With that extra hour of sleep Sunday, public safety officials are urging Bay Area residents to check smoke detectors and change batteries on the devices.
While changing clocks, fire officials suggest changing the battery on all smoke detectors to keep up with fire safety at home.
Fire officials from the San Jose Fire Department said that although Sunday provides a good time for an annual battery change, residents should be testing smoke alarms monthly.

A man was critically injured in a stabbing in San Francisco's Mission District on Thursday night, police said Friday.
The stabbing was reported at 8:13 p.m. at 21st and Capp streets.
The 20-year-old victim was walking in the area when two suspects approached and one stabbed him multiple times in the torso, according to police.
The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries, which are considered life-threatening.

Federal agents in the past week confiscated about 1,200 counterfeit San Francisco Giants T-shirts being sold by illegal street vendors trying to take advantage of the team's World Series run, U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials said today.
The shirts, which celebrated the Giants' victory in the National League Championship Series, were taken by plainclothes agents who encountered vendors outside AT&T Park and elsewhere in the city, Assistant Special Agent in Charge Anthony Ho said.

San Francisco on Wednesday will hold a ticker-tape parade and civic celebration in honor of the Giants, Mayor Ed Lee announced Sunday.
The parade in honor of the Giants’ World Series victory against the Detroit Tigers will start at 11 a.m. at the foot of Market Street and continue to Civic Center Plaza, Lee said.
The Giants swept the Tigers, winning the series in Game 4 in Detroit on Sunday night with a 4-3 victory in 10 innings. It is the team’s second World Series win in three years.
