The former owner of the Masonic Avenue home that was searched by police on Tuesday in connection with the disappearance of 10-year-old San Francisco boy Kevin Collins nearly three decades ago said today he was shocked to hear the house could be tied to the famous case.
Public records show that Daryl McCurry, 63, owned the duplex at 1106-1108 Masonic Ave. in the city's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood from 1977 to 1988. Kevin went missing in 1984 after leaving basketball practice at nearby St. Agnes School.

The California Highway Patrol is seeking more information about a "sideshow" on Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland on Saturday afternoon where participants were doing "doughnuts," a CHP sergeant said.
The CHP received a call around 4 p.m. about reckless driving on northbound I-880 at Coliseum Way, CHP Sgt. Diana McDermott said.
By the time officers responded, the drivers had left, however videos were posted online later that day.

A whale was spotted in San Francisco Bay on Thursday afternoon near Pier 39, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials.
The whale was traveling east in the San Francisco Bay when it was seen around 3:30 p.m.
Coast Guard officials said a whale sighting in San Francisco Bay is fairly common in January.
Marin County-based Marine Mammal Center spokesman Jim Oswald said this time of year marks the gray whale migration. The whales are heading down to Baja.
For onlookers, Oswald advised using caution.

A Mission Street art gallery may be in trouble after San Francisco firefighters responded Tuesday night to a fire intentionally set there, apparently as part of an art piece, a fire official said Wednesday.
Firefighters responded around 10 p.m. Tuesday to Queen's Nails, a gallery located at 3191 Mission St. in the city's Bernal Heights neighborhood, Deputy Fire Chief Mark Gonzales said.
The fire, which was quickly put out after causing $5,000 in damage, was apparently started on a piece of art shaped like the U.S. and made of matches that was set ablaze, Gonzales said.

The San Francisco Police Department on Wednesday announced that a man has been arrested in connection with a home invasion robbery and murder in San Francisco’s Sunset District in 2010.
Andre Bueno, 29, was arrested for allegedly killing 44-year-old Xiao "Ben" Xiong Luo at a home in the 2400 block of Moraga Street at about 5:45 p.m. on Jan. 27, 2010, police said.
Bueno had an outstanding arrest warrant for murder when he was detained for a traffic stop by Las Vegas Metropolitan police on Dec. 3., according to police.

Caltrans said it plans to begin making repairs today to the Bay Bridge fenders that were damaged when an empty oil tanker struck the span Jan. 7.
The tanker, the Overseas Reymar, hit the easternmost tower on the bridge’s western span around 11:20 a.m. on Jan. 7. There was no oil spill, and no one aboard the 752-foot vessel, which was piloted by bar pilot Guy Kleess, was injured, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The fender system worked as it was intended to, and the structure of the bridge was not damaged, according to Caltrans.

A man was shot in the arm in the Bayview district Tuesday night, police said Wednesday.
The shooting was reported around 9 p.m. in the 100 block of Doublerock Street.
The 19-year-old victim said he heard gunshots, then realized he had been shot. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries, which are not life-threatening, according to police.

A motorcyclist who was arrested Tuesday after leading authorities on a pursuit across the Bay Bridge and then crashing in San Francisco has been identified by the California Highway Patrol as 30-year-old Steven Stanford Jr.
The crash was reported at 12:17 p.m. Tuesday at Fifth and Harrison streets in the South of Market neighborhood.
The accident ended a pursuit that started when Stanford allegedly drove through the Bay Bridge toll plaza without paying, CHP Officer Michael Ferguson said.

A long-planned police substation on blighted Sixth Street in South of Market will open some time next month, Mayor Ed Lee said Tuesday.
The site, located at 72 Sixth St. between Jessie and Mission streets, has long been slated for the substation, but plans stalled in early 2012 when a new state law went into effect ordering the dissolution of local redevelopment agencies.
San Francisco’s agency was overseeing the project, prompting officials to alter their plans and instead pay $775,000 out of the general fund for renovations to the building.

A standoff that started this afternoon finally ended tonight when a man barricaded inside a San Francisco apartment surrendered to police, a police officer said.
Officers were called to the apartment complex in the 400 block of 20th Avenue at 3:20 p.m. after receiving a report that a man had fired a gun inside an apartment there, Officer Carlos Manfredi said.
Police found a bullet hole in the front door and after making several attempts to knock on the door they attempted to enter the apartment fearing the man may be a danger to himself.

Police are investigating whether the same person committed two attempted bank robberies in the downtown area Friday.
The first robbery attempt was reported about 1:45 p.m. in the 1200 block of Market Street, and the second happened about 20 minutes later in the 100 block of Pine Street.
In each case, the suspect — dressed in a striped hooded sweatshirt and Ugg-style boots — approached a bank teller and handed over a note demanding money, but ran away when the teller left, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

A representative of the California High-Speed Rail Authority was in San Francisco on Thursday to talk about the train system’s near- and long-term plans in the Bay Area.
Ben Tripousis, regional director for Northern California, told a packed auditorium at the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association that the under-three-hour trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles could be a reality by 2029, but that a host of political, financial and logistical obstacles must be overcome before high-speed trains reach the Bay Area.

Bay Area residents may want to bundle up, as a cold-weather system is headed this way and will linger for several days, a National Weather Service forecaster said.
“Temperatures will start dropping” today, forecaster Steve Anderson said.
Daytime highs in the greater Bay Area are expected to be in the low 50s, and overnight temperatures will dip to about 35 to 40 degrees, he said.
“The overnight lows are not too crazy cold until you get out into the East Bay and North Bay valleys, where temperatures will be slightly below freezing,” Anderson said.

The U.S. Supreme Court announced Monday that it will hear arguments March 26 on the constitutionality of California’s 2008 voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage.Sponsors of Proposition 8 and their committee, Protect Marriage, are appealing a ruling made last year in which the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the initiative.The high court’s decision is expected by the end of June.
