The San Francisco 49ers will make a bid next month to host the 50th Super Bowl in 2016, and announced today that they are bringing in a couple of stars from the franchise's illustrious history to help out.
Former quarterback Steve Young and coach George Seifert are joining the San Francisco Bay Area regional bid committee to host Super Bowl L at the 49ers' new stadium in Santa Clara, which opens next year.
The announcement was made at San Francisco City Hall this morning by team and city officials.

A month after a transient was crushed to death in a grisly incident on top of a San Francisco train station elevator, the medical examiner's office has released the man's name and are asking for the public's help in finding his family.
The man has been identified as 42-year-old David Thomas, according to Dr. Amy Hart, San Francisco's chief medical examiner. Thomas was found dead on the night of March 10 in an elevator shaft at the Montgomery BART and Municipal Railway station.

Employees at San Francisco General Hospital were ordered to shelter in place for nearly an hour this afternoon because of a report of a gunman near the hospital, police and hospital officials said.
Three people have been detained in connection with the incident, which began at about 1:45 p.m. when officers saw a man possibly armed with a handgun near Building 80/90 at the hospital campus at Potrero Avenue and 22nd Street, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

San Mateo and Hillsborough police located and then lost a burglary suspect who was interrupted at one San Mateo home Friday and might have cased other homes in Hillsborough, according to police.
San Mateo police were called to a home in the 600 block of Edgewood Road about 12:20 p.m. for a reported interrupted burglary.
The suspects were already gone when police arrived, but around the same time Hillsborough police intercepted and pursued a white Chevy Malibu speeding onto northbound Interstate 280. The suspect in the vehicle discarded items as he drove.

A taxicab was stolen near San Francisco State University early Friday morning and the suspect then led authorities on a pursuit to Pacifica and back, a San Francisco police spokesman said.
The cab was parked at Denslowe and Banbury drives around 1:15 a.m. when the driver got out to help a sick passenger, police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy said.

A special office opened Tuesday to help residents affected by a massive water main break in February in the area of 15th Avenue and Wawona Street in West Portal.
The field office, located at 383 West Portal Ave., will connect residents to services offered by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, the City Attorney’s Office, the Department of Building Inspection and other agencies.
The office is intended to help the residents of the 23 homes that were flooded when a water main broke early Feb. 27. About a dozen cars also were damaged.

A college student visiting family during his spring break was killed in an apparent gang-related shooting in San Francisco’s Mission district early Saturday morning, a police spokesman said.Around 3 a.m., the 19-year-old man was walking with a friend near the intersection of 24th and Bryant streets when a car approached. A man exited the car, asked the teen if he was involved in a gang and shot him in his upper body, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

Crews were filming the pilot for a TV series starring Minnie Driver and David Walton in various San Francisco neighborhoods this week, a San Francisco Film Commission coordinator said.
Filming wrapped up Wednesday for the pilot episode of NBC's "About a Boy" directed by Jon Favreau. Shooting was done in front of iconic San Francisco homes in the North of Panhandle area and in scenic spots along the waterfront over the past few days, film coordinator Lauren Machado said.

UPDATE: San Francisco's Glen Park BART station has reopened about two hours after a person was fatally struck by a train there, BART officials said.
The person was struck around 4 p.m. at the station, located at 2901 Diamond St., BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost said. Medical personnel responded and pronounced the person dead at the scene minutes later, Trost said. Authorities are investigating the incident.

A suspicious fire in San Francisco's Bayview District early this morning caused an estimated $2.75 million in damage to three buildings and displaced 30 people from the neighborhood, authorities said.
The four-alarm blaze was reported at 12:53 a.m. at a two-story home at 1644 McKinnon Ave. near Third Street and spread to two other buildings.
Fire department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said the fire brought down live power lines and caused a gas leak that fueled the flames, which continued to burn until 4:19 a.m.

A man who was found fatally shot in a car in San Francisco's Bayview District last week has been identified by the medical examiner's office as 32-year-old Dwayne Tatum.
The shooting was reported at 3:22 p.m. on March 18 in the 1300 block of Thomas Avenue. Tatum, a San Francisco resident, was found sitting in a car with gunshot wounds to his head and chest. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

A man who was injured in a triple shooting at a nightclub in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood early this morning is in critical condition but is expected to survive, a police officer said.
The victim, a man in his 30s, was shot around 1:30 a.m. along with two men in their 20s at the 330 Ritch nightclub on Ritch Street, a small alleyway off of Brannan Street, police said.

A man convicted in September of more than a dozen felony counts stemming from a complicated scam at San Francisco's One Rincon Hill luxury residential tower was sentenced today to 20 years in state prison.
Jay Shah, 48, who was convicted along with co-defendant Winston Lum, was ordered this morning by San Francisco Superior Court Judge Charlene Kieselbach to serve the 20-year term and pay a fine of $14.1 million -- twice the amount taken in the scam.
