Caltrans completes excavation of Devil’s Slide tunnels

Caltrans crews have finished excavation work on two tunnels on the San Mateo County coast that will allow motorists to bypass Devil’s Slide on state Highway 1 beginning next year.More than 314,000 cubic yards of soil, clay and rock has been removed during excavation of the two tunnels, which run beneath San Pedro Mountain just south of Pacifica, Caltrans District 4 Director Bijan Sartipi said.The tunnels are each 30 feet wide and about 4,200 feet long.Crews are continuing to work on installing electrical systems, insulation and lining on the inner tunnel walls. Great Highway maintenance begins, will last through week

The San Francisco Department of Public Works is performing maintenance on the Great Highway today, work that was supposed to have started Monday, a spokesman said.The department was scheduled to begin a weeklong maintenance project Monday morning, but the work was postponed until 9 a.m. today.Great Highway will be closed to vehicle traffic between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for one week.Workers will be trimming back vegetation from the medians to improve visibility and will be removing sand from the roadway. Mavericks surfer Jacob Trette remains in critical condition

A Southern California surfer who nearly drowned in the ocean off of Half Moon Bay on Saturday remained in critical condition this afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.Jacob Trette was airlifted to Stanford University Medical Center after he was caught in the surf by a 20-foot wave at Mavericks at about 10 a.m., Coastside Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Ari Delay said.Trette has been listed in critical condition since Saturday, when good Samaritans pulled him from the water and brought him to shore, Stanford Hospital spokeswoman Liat Kobza said. School district agrees to $4M settlement for Richmond High gang rape victim

The West Contra Costa Unified School District has agreed to pay $4 million to settle a lawsuit filed on behalf of a teenage girl who was beaten and gang raped outside Richmond High School's homecoming dance in October 2009, an attorney for the school district confirmed today.The school district signed the settlement in November, but didn't release specifics about the terms of the agreement because of concerns for the safety of the victim and her family, said Pleasant Hill attorney Timothy Murphy, who represented the school district in the civil case. Two-alarm fire shuts down Mountain View butcher, sushi bar

A two-alarm blaze significantly damaged a butcher shop and shut down a neighboring sushi restaurant in Mountain View early Sunday afternoon, a fire spokeswoman said. Firefighters responded to an employee-reported fire at Dittmer's Gourmet Meats and Wurst-Haus at 400 San Antonio Road at about 11:50 a.m., fire spokeswoman Jaime Garrett said. Arriving crews found flames and smoke coming out of the butcher shop, and about 30 firefighters were called in to put out the blaze, Garrett said. Read More

A surfer was seriously injured at the Mavericks surfing spot in Half Moon Bay this morning, a Coastside Fire Protection District battalion chief said. Firefighters responded shortly before 10 a.m. to a report of a man who was injured at the famous surfing spot, located about a half-mile from Pillar Point Harbor, Battalion Chief Ari Delay said. The surfer, who is about 30 years old, apparently wiped out on a wave and was found face down in the water by someone who was nearby and took him to shore, Delay said. Read More

9-year-old boy shot in stomach, expected to survive

A 9-year-old boy was shot in the stomach in San Francisco's Western Addition neighborhood today, a police spokesman said. The shooting was reported around noon in the 1100 block of Turk Street, San Francisco police Officer Albie Esparza said. Officers arrived to find the 9-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen, Esparza said. The boy was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for his injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening, Esparza said. Maintenance work to begin Monday along Great Highway

Shifting sands on San Francisco's Great Highway can pose a roadway hazard, and city crews will close the road early next week while they reverse the work of Mother Nature along the roadway. The city's Department of Public Works will close the Great Highway to vehicle traffic between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard for one week beginning Monday. NTSB cites faulty welds in San Bruno blast

A report released Friday by the National Transportation Safety Board has indicated there were faulty welds on a pipeline that exploded in a San Bruno neighborhood Sept. 9, claiming eight lives and destroying dozens of homes. Line 132, which was installed under the Crestmoor Canyon neighborhood in 1956, was initially believed to be "seamless," according to PG&E, and not made of welded parts. But the metallurgical report released Friday said a weld on the pipe had "overstress from the root of the weld." Read More

Not guilty plea in Polk Street coffee shop murder case

An East Bay man accused of chasing another man into a coffee shop on San Francisco’s Polk Street last week then fatally shooting and robbing him was arraigned in court Friday on murder charges.Jodie Daniels, 29, of El Cerrito, pleaded not guilty during a brief hearing Friday morning in San Francisco Superior Court in connection with the Jan. 13 slaying of Terry Turner Jr.Daniels allegedly chased Turner past customers in the Jebena Coffee and Tea Co. at 990 Polk St. at about 4:20 p.m., cornered him in a back room, and shot him multiple times, according to police. San Francisco businesses warned about crime ahead of Chinese New Year

Businesses in the San Francisco Bayview district were warned Thursday that they should report crimes to the Police Department during Chinese New Year celebrations next month. "The only way we can ensure a safe community is for everyone to have thorough conversations," District 10 Supervisor Malia Cohen said. San Francisco politicians at the event wished everyone a happy and safe Chinese New Year, or lunar New Year, which begins Feb. 3. The nonprofit co-founder who was slain outside Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo will be honored Thursday during the 17th anniversary of the group. David Lewis, 54, co-founded the East Palo Alto nonprofit Free at Last that provides services including substance abuse treatment and transitional housing. Lewis was killed in a shooting on June 9 in the parking lot of the Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo. Read More
