San Bruno police are searching for a man who jumped out of a car and opened fire on a group of people Friday night not far from the Caltrain station.Officers responded to the 500 block of Mastick Avenue at about 10 p.m. on a report of gunshots. One of the intended victims located by the officers told police that while he was walking on the sidewalk with friends they noticed a vehicle approach. The suspect, described as a Hispanic male in his 20s, got out of the car and opened fire on the group, then hopped back into the car and fled the area, police said.

Due to long-term construction underway on the Dumbarton Bridge, Caltrans began closing lanes in each direction on the bridge Monday night to facilitate the seismic retrofit that is expected to be completed by August 2012.Motorists should expect overnight lane closures in either direction during the ongoing construction work, with up to two of the three bridge lanes in each direction affected.

The California Supreme Court in San Francisco today upheld the death penalty of a Salinas man who killed an 11-year-old girl while burglarizing her home in 1998. Ronald Wayne Moore, now 58, was convicted in Monterey County Superior Court in 1999 of the first-degree murder of Nicole Carnahan on March 4, 1998. The jury also found a special circumstance of murder committed during a burglary and robbery, which provided the foundation for the death sentence given to Moore.

A report of a man with a gun on campus prompted the evacuation of La Escuelita Elementary School in Oakland this afternoon. Officers responded to the school, located at 1100 Third Ave., after receiving the anonymous tip at 12:45 p.m., a school district spokesman said. The case of a woman who was killed and set ablaze in the Lower Haight neighborhood in San Francisco reportedly was related to domestic violence, prosecutors said Monday.
Almon Johnson, accused of killing the mother of his infant son and then burning her body and car in San Francisco's Lower Haight neighborhood last week, appeared in court for the first time Monday.

A man and woman were shot and killed in a souvenir shop near San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf on Sunday evening, and police have detained a man who may be connected to the shooting, a police spokesman said.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at 269 Jefferson St. at about 8:20 p.m., according to a dispatcher at the San Francisco Fire Department.
Arriving crews found a man and woman who had been shot inside a store that sells souvenirs and luggage. They were pronounced dead at the scene, San Francisco police Lt. Troy Dangerfield said.

One person was injured in a one-alarm fire in San Francisco's Mission District on Sunday morning, according to the fire department.
Units responded to reports of a fire in a home at 1141 S. Van Ness Ave. at about 5:05 a.m., officials said.
One occupant of the three-story residence was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with minor injuries, according to the fire department.
The blaze was declared under control at about 5:35 a.m.
Investigators believe the fire was ignited by faulty electricity wiring inside the home, according to the fire department.

A second earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.4 was reported in the East Bay this morning, just minutes after an earlier quake shook the area.The aftershock was reported just before 3:20 a.m. and was centered in the same location -- four miles south of Danville and 11 miles east-northeast of Oakland, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.The quake had a depth of 4.1 miles, the USGS said.

A transient man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after choking his girlfriend in a South San Francisco hotel Friday night, according to South San Francisco police.Derrick Taylor, 23, was arrested after allegedly punching and choking his 19-year-old girlfriend in a South San Francisco hotel at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday.The two had been arguing when Taylor struck the teenage woman with his fists and choked her. She fought Taylor off, fled to another room, and called the police, according to police.

The dead body of a Terra Linda High School teacher was found Saturday afternoon, possibly in her backyard in Ross, according to police.
Debra Schmitt, 53, was found dead at about 3:30 p.m. this afternoon, possibly in the backyard of her home in Ross, said a police officer who didn't want to be named.
Schmitt was considered missing after she failed to show up to class the morning of Jan. 20 at Terra Linda High School at 320 Nova Albion Way in San Rafael.
