Explosion damages business in San Mateo

A small explosive device was detonated in a San Mateo business district Sunday morning, according to the San Mateo Police Department. A loud explosion rang out near the 1000 block of South Amphlett Boulevard just after 7 a.m., police said. Police and firefighters arrived and found an incendiary device — similar to an M-80 firecracker — that had been ignited near an abandoned couch in front of a vacant building. The business sustained two broken windows caused by the blast, which was reportedly heard within a half-mile radius. No injuries were reported. Read More

Officials in San Mateo are warning residents to beware of telephone scammers who have recently conned elderly victims into wiring money abroad under false pretenses, police said.One San Mateo resident was contacted by a suspect claiming to be a grandson who had been arrested for drunken driving in New York, according to San Mateo police.
