Five days after Charles Dowd, a 69-year-old San Mateo man, went missing from an Amtrak train headed from the Bay Area to Chicago, family members continue to be hopeful that he will be found safe.
Dowd’s wife, Patricia, said today that their two children, Jennifer and Kevin, are in Omaha, Neb., to hand out fliers and organize a search party near where their father was last seen Thursday by an Amtrak train conductor.
“They’re trying to rally a really big search party in Omaha today,” Patricia Dowd said.

A man was arrested in the Bayview district last Saturday after police found several loaded weapons in his home, where three children also live.
Police detained Daron Raynaldo, 21, of San Francisco, after he exited his home in the 700 block of Missouri Street with his girlfriend and three children, police said.
Officers searched Raynaldo’s home and found a MAC-10 assault weapon, a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun and a .22-caliber rifle with a cut-off stock, police said.
All of the weapons were loaded and within arm’s reach of all of the children, according to police.

The man accused of killing a hairstylist in the Diamond Heights neighborhood in June pleaded not guilty to murder and residential robbery charges Thursday, prosecutors said.
James Rickleffs, 45, was arrested Sept. 2 in connection with the death of Steven “Eriq” Escalon, a 28-year-old who was found bound and gagged in his apartment in the 5000 block of Diamond Heights Boulevard on the evening of June 12, according to police.

Police are asking for the public’s help in determining who killed a young man on a busy San Francisco thoroughfare in April.
Lawrence Richardson, 21, was shot multiple times shortly after 10:30 p.m. on April 2 as he was leaving a grocery store at the intersection of Divisadero and Eddy streets.
He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He is survived his mother, father, and his 1-year-old daughter, according to police.

A man who allegedly attacked a police officer and a park ranger with a tree branch in Golden Gate Park on Sunday has been identified by police as 39-year-old William Henry Deegan.
Deegan, who is a transient, was arrested after an incident that began around 10 a.m. Sunday when he was approached by a park ranger in a forested area of the park near Transverse Drive, police Officer Albie Esparza said.
During the interaction, Deegan became violent, striking the ranger with the tree limb, Esparza said.

A Grass Valley man was arrested for allegedly attacking another man Sunday evening in a restroom at AT&T Park during a Giants game against the rival Los Angeles Dodgers.
Christopher Torii Smith, 26, was arrested in connection with the attack, which was reported at 6:42 p.m. Sunday, police Officer Albie Esparza said.
Smith reportedly approached the 21-year-old victim in a ballpark restroom and began hitting him. The victim fell to the ground and Smith continued attacking him, Esparza said.

A man was shot and killed in the 2300 block of East 22nd Street in East Oakland on Thursday afternoon, police said.
It was the second fatal shooting in Oakland on Thursday.
In an early morning incident, police said, 24-year-old MiAndrew Rachel of Emeryville was found dead in the 900 block of West MacArthur Boulevard .

A police pursuit from San Pablo into Richmond on Wednesday night ended with an officer shooting and injuring a suspected car thief, a Richmond police lieutenant said Thursday.
A San Pablo police officer who had chased the suspect into Richmond shot and wounded the alleged thief on Rydin Road near Central Avenue, Richmond police Lt. Bisa French said.
The shooting occurred just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, she said, adding that she did not know the suspect’s condition.San Pablo police were not immediately available to comment on the shooting.

A 17-year-old boy believed to have been one of two people in a car that rammed and shot at a California Highway Patrol vehicle in Oakland earlier this summer was arrested in East Palo Alto on Wednesday, police said.
Oakland police, CHP officers and the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Kenyon Thomas of Oakland in the 1400 block of Bay Street in East Palo Alto about 11 a.m., according to Oakland police.
Police had been searching for Thomas since July 21, when a CHP officer attempted to pull over a van near the 800 block of 50th Avenue in Oakland.
