22 people rescued from boat accident near Alcatraz

Nearly two dozen passengers aboard a boat near Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay were rescued when the vessel started sinking Friday night, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The 22 passengers and crew aboard the Neptune, a 45-foot boat, were safely rescued after the boat struck a shoal near the north side of Alcatraz and started taking on water, according to the USCG. The Coast Guard received a report at 8:42 p.m. that the Neptune had struck an object and had a 1-foot gash on its side. Read More

West Portal Squat and Gobble burns in four-alarm fire, Red Cross on scene, Muni service interrupted

American Red Cross volunteers are providing assistance at a four-alarm fire at the Squat and Gobble West Portal restaurant in San Francisco that is still burning this morning. The fire was reported around 4:40 a.m. at 1 and 9 W. Portal Ave and was not under control as of 9:30 a.m., San Francisco fire officials said. One firefighter suffered minor smoke inhalation while battling the blaze but did not need to be taken to a hospital, fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said. Read More

Entangled sea lion rescued at Pier 39

A rescue crew captured one of two sea lions that were spotted entangled in debris at Pier 39 on Tuesday, a Marine Mammal Center spokesman said. The Marine Mammal Center, based in Sausalito, responded to the “K-Dock,” an area where sea lions congregate on floating wooden platforms, about 12:30 p.m., Marine Mammal Center spokesman Jim Oswald said. Update: Southbound Highway 101 now open after accident results from shooting

UPDATE: All lanes have reopened on southbound U.S. Highway 101 following a police investigation and accident just north of Holly Street, according to the California Highway Patrol. A crash involving an apparent shooting victim was reported around 3:30 p.m. near Holly Street, CHP officer James Evans said. Tourist tricked by companions results in shots fired, robbery

A group of four suspects robbed a male victim at gunpoint and fired off dry gunshots at the Amsterdam hostel in downtown San Francisco Thursday night, according to police. Police received reports of an armed robbery at the Amsterdam Hostel at 749 Taylor St. 8:09 p.m., police said. The victim, a guest at the hostel, told police that he invited two females in their 20s to his hostel bedroom and after leaving, the two females returned to the hostel room with two males in their 20s. Hidden cameras found in principal drug case

A Santa Clara elementary school principal arrested on drug charges last week had 10 hidden cameras in his apartment, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. Eric Dean Lewis, 42, a San Francisco resident and principal of Montague Elementary School, was arrested about 4 p.m. Thursday at the Caltrain station at Fourth and King streets in The City. He allegedly offered to provide drugs to an undercover officer who had contacted him through an online dating site, Deputy District Attorney Daniel Rothbach said in court Monday. Read More

Cocaine theft trial starts for ex-SFPD drug lab worker

Jury selection began in federal court Monday morning for the trial of a former San Francisco police crime laboratory technician accused of stealing cocaine from the facility. Man accused of kidnap try, other incidents

San Mateo police arrested a San Francisco man they say attempted to abduct a 9-year-old girl from an elementary school Friday. Bradley Mrozek, 25, was arrested Saturday morning after police linked him to the incident at Parkside Elementary School and to two prior incidents at Horrall Elementary and Bayside STEM Academy, San Mateo police Sgt. Dave Norris  said Sunday. Police believe Mrozek assaulted the girl at Parkside shortly before 2:45 p.m. Friday and transported her a short distance away from the school in an attempt to isolate her, Norris said. Read More

Pair of suspects held in ‘short and tall’ robberies

Two men have been arrested in connection with a series of 11 holdups at San Francisco businesses since mid-August, according to police. Dubbed the “short guy, tall guy” robbery series because of the suspects’ height disparity — with one standing about 5 feet 6 inches and the other around 5 feet 11 inches — the robberies occurred between Aug. 19 and Sept. 16, police announced Friday. Family seeking missing San Mateo man in Nebraska

Five days after Charles Dowd, a 69-year-old San Mateo man, went missing from an Amtrak train headed from the Bay Area to Chicago, family members continue to be hopeful that he will be found safe. Dowd’s wife, Patricia, said today that their two children, Jennifer and Kevin, are in Omaha, Neb., to hand out fliers and organize a search party near where their father was last seen Thursday by an Amtrak train conductor. “They’re trying to rally a really big search party in Omaha today,” Patricia Dowd said. A few thousand law enforcement officers, government officials and community members gathered in Vacaville on Thursday morning to say goodbye to California Highway Patrol Officer Kenyon Youngstrom, who was fatally shot by a driver during a routine traffic stop last week. The memorial service for the 37-year-old CHP officer and father of four at Mission Church in Vacaville drew a wide roster of state and local officials, including Gov. Parolee allegedly kept arsenal near kids at Bayview home

A man was arrested in the Bayview district last Saturday after police found several loaded weapons in his home, where three children also live. Police detained Daron Raynaldo, 21, of San Francisco, after he exited his home in the 700 block of Missouri Street with his girlfriend and three children, police said. Officers searched Raynaldo’s home and found a MAC-10 assault weapon, a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun and a .22-caliber rifle with a cut-off stock, police said. Suspect in Diamond Heights slaying pleads not guilty

The man accused of killing a hairstylist in the Diamond Heights neighborhood in June pleaded not guilty to murder and residential robbery charges Thursday, prosecutors said. James Rickleffs, 45, was arrested Sept. 2 in connection with the death of Steven “Eriq” Escalon, a 28-year-old who was found bound and gagged in his apartment in the 5000 block of Diamond Heights Boulevard on the evening of June 12, according to police. Supervisors back park funds bond after receiving 'D' from advocates

After receiving a D grade in a report compiled by local park advocates, West Portal Playground was the focus of a news conference Wednesday morning in support of a parks bond that will appear on the November ballot. Supervisors Malia Cohen, Carmen Chu and Sean Elsbernd joined San Francisco Parks Alliance Executive Director Matthew O’Grady and others at the playground at 131 Lenox Way to encourage passage of Proposition B, a $195 million bond that would provide $15.5 million for playgrounds in need of renovation.
