As a San Francisco public school educator, teachers have the opportunity to work with a diverse group of students alongside supportive and talented colleagues. They are an integral part of the district’s effort to ensure that every student who enrolls in our schools will graduate ready for college, career and life.
The SFUSD offers competitive salaries determined by experience, education level and credentials. In addition to comprehensive medical, vision, and dental insurance for teachers and eligible dependents, teacher salaries have increased 12 percent between 2014 and 2016.
Teachers may also qualify for additional incentives. The district provides annual financial incentives of up to $2,000 for teachers who choose to work at our hard-to-staff schools (those with historically high turnover) and $1,000 for teachers in our hard-to-fill subject areas (bilingual and special education).
This year, the SFUSD is also offering an additional bonus of up to $4,000 for special education teachers, school psychologists, behavior analysts and speech and language pathologists.

Pathways to teaching
There are many ways to become a teacher, including attending traditional teacher credential programs at local colleges and universities. The SFUSD offers several other ways to become a teacher.
San Francisco Teacher Residency Program
Combining a year-long classroom apprenticeship with targeted master’s-level coursework, SFTR provides residents with the practical learning, hands-on experience, and ongoing support essential for successful careers in teaching. To learn more, visit www.sfteacherresidency.org.
SFUSD Pathway to Teaching (anticipated launch 2017-18 school year)
The SFUSD is currently developing an exciting new district-run, alternative teacher certification program for the 2017-18 school year, called SFUSD Pathway to Teaching. The vision of SFUSD Pathway is to implement a high-quality, research-based, training and certification program capable of preparing new teachers to meet the academic learning needs of SFUSD students through rigorous, engaging instruction.
SFUSD Pathway’s ideal candidates are San Francisco community members who are committed to educational excellence for all San Francisco students. SFUSD Pathway will be focused on preparing teachers in our hardest-to-fill subject areas: special education and bilingual.

The Para-to-Teacher Program assists current SFUSD paraprofessionals who want to become teachers. Candidates should be enrolled in college and have completed at least 48 units.
Substitute Teaching and Paraprofessionals
For candidates who have experience with youth or have considered teaching as a profession, substitute teaching or becoming a paraprofessional is an excellent opportunity to get a foot in the door for future employment with SFUSD.
