Port should select wisely when choosing company to operate cruise ship terminal

The sleek new cruise ship terminal on Pier 27 is a welcome addition to the waterfront. Ideally, it will be a boon to The City and the region as it brings in visitors from around the world who might not otherwise visit or spend their money here. But it also has the possibility to become a giant albatross around the neck of the Port of San Francisco if not properly managed.

Grads getting head start on life

Graduations are beginning to take place around The City. And while we celebrate our high school graduates, we also know that what happens next for our youths is one of the most important tests of how well our education system has worked for them. While the path to success looks different for everyone — and sometimes it is a long and winding road — we know that it is our responsibility to help prepare our students with the skills and dispositions that will help them on their journeys. And conducting a job search is very much like conducting a sales campaign. Read More

Pregnancy, drinking still don’t mix — no matter who does it

Gwyneth Paltrow was outed for drinking a Guinness while pregnant, but a new study claims she may not have done anything risky. Seems British docs think two glasses of wine a week or the equivalent doesn’t add up to developmental problems in kids. We think they’re off-base. A fetus’s alcohol tolerance level is unknowable. And we don’t know what environmental stressors may switch on genes that pass along vulnerability to alcoholism or learning disabilities. The responsible thing is to say no to anything that might cause problems for your baby. Read More

Limousine industry just loosely regulated

Our question this week comes from Jeanne L. from Daly City: Q: “I read about the horrible limousine disaster that happened to the bride and her wedding party. What laws apply to limousine companies? Who is responsible in a situation like this?” A: The tragedy that struck earlier this month on the San Mateo Bridge is unimaginable. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the five women who lost their lives in the horrible fire. Read More

anti-Israel Muni ad
On my recent trip to San Francisco, I was deeply disturbed to learn about the posters in The City accusing Israel of apartheid. As a black South African who lived under apartheid, this system was implemented in South Africa to subjugate people of color and deny them a variety of their rights. In my view, Israel cannot be compared to apartheid in South Africa. Those who make the accusation expose their ignorance of what apartheid really is. Read More
