The San Francisco Examiner has it all wrong (“Support both tax increases for education,” Oct. 10 editorial). A yes vote on Proposition 30 will not guarantee any new funding for education — not even one cent. Gov. Jerry Brown is making empty threats to cut education in order to scare voters, and Prop. 30 is not a “millionaires tax” — it will negatively impact every California taxpayer and resident.

So far this year, three California cities have filed for bankruptcy protection, and it’s likely they will be joined by at least a few others in the not-too-distant future.
That’s not merely journalistic speculation. Moody’s Investment Service, which closely monitors state and local governments for the huge municipal bond industry, issued an unusual public warning the other day that other California cities may be headed down the same path.

Nearly six months ago, the nation’s five largest loan providers — Ally/GMAC, Bank of America, Citi, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo — agreed to the $25 billion National Mortgage Settlement in response to the ongoing foreclosure crisis.
The terms of the settlement just went into full effect.
Thanks to California Attorney General Kamala Harris, almost half the settlement — $12 billion — was set aside for our state.

San Mateo County is the only California county that elects its Board of Supervisors in countywide elections. All other counties elect supervisors within individual districts. Voters have an opportunity to replace countywide elections with district elections by approving Measure B this November.
District elections are the better choice as they lower taxpayer costs and promote more competition, accountability and citizen involvement.
