F.X. Crowley’s son offers his view on dad

I am an aspiring journalist at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and the son of District 7 Board of Supervisors candidate F.X. Crowley. As an avid newspaper reader from an early age, I have had the good fortune of growing up in San Francisco. Read More

Prop. A will let CCSF keep serving San Francisco

As the largest community college in California, City College of San Francisco serves almost 100,000 students annually and is our own local resource and treasure. As a native San Franciscan and CCSF faculty member, I have witnessed the transformations that have taken place daily at the college. Read More

Prop. 30 might not help schools

The San Francisco Examiner has it all wrong (“Support both tax increases for education,” Oct. 10 editorial). A yes vote on Proposition 30 will not guarantee any new funding for education — not even one cent. Gov. Jerry Brown is making empty threats to cut education in order to scare voters, and Prop. 30 is not a “millionaires tax” — it will negatively impact every California taxpayer and resident. Read More

All systems go for broadband

Although NASA has retired the 30-year-old space shuttle program, that doesn’t mean Americans have stopped shooting for the moon. American ingenuity is creating an out-of-this-world experience right here on the ground. Today, we are able to wirelessly download books and magazines to tablets we can manipulate with our fingertips. Read More

State’s cities are on fiscal edge, firm says

So far this year, three California cities have filed for bankruptcy protection, and it’s likely they will be joined by at least a few others in the not-too-distant future. Nearly six months ago, the nation’s five largest loan providers — Ally/GMAC, Bank of America, Citi, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo — agreed to the $25 billion National Mortgage Settlement in response to the ongoing foreclosure crisis. The terms of the settlement just went into full effect. Thanks to California Attorney General Kamala Harris, almost half the settlement — $12 billion — was set aside for our state. Read More

San Mateo County needs district elections

San Mateo County is the only California county that elects its Board of Supervisors in countywide elections. All other counties elect supervisors within individual districts. Voters have an opportunity to replace countywide elections with district elections by approving Measure B this November. District elections are the better choice as they lower taxpayer costs and promote more competition, accountability and citizen involvement. Read More

Vote for Environmental & Spiritual Restoration: Yes on Prop F

After many years of ministry devoted to deepening the connection between ecology and faith, I have come to realize that most people have a strong sense of the divine in nature. Nature, for many, is the place where we meet God and taste the beauty of creation. San Franciscans especially thrive on the natural wonder around us and have been famously progressive and forward-thinking when it comes to sustainable living and preservation of our natural resources.
