Next week on April 18, we will commemorate the 106th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake and great fire. As we remember the lives lost, we will also celebrate the city that we rebuilt. Earthquakes, like the one just suffered in Indonesia this week, remind us that we absolutely must be prepared for the next disaster here in San Francisco. As we always say, “It is not a matter of if, but when” the next earthquake will shake The City.

California’s Department of Motor Vehicles probably touches more state residents than any other state agency, and therefore has become the bureaucracy that everyone loves to hate. At one time, that disdain might have been warranted. But under several past governors, and continuing under Gov. Jerry Brown, the DMV has become a model of consumer-friendly service and the intelligent use of technology that seems to escape other agencies.

When I was in high school, I had the opportunity to work at a summer camp in San Pedro.It gave me a chance to be a leader at a young age. It also made me a responsible young guy, since I was in charge of about 20 kids. I think I got more out of it than the kids. Because of this experience, and a few others, I was motivated to become a teacher and have had a very rewarding career as an educator.

The California State University system was built as the vehicle to propel young people toward the American dream. California’s working- and middle-class families could confidently send their children to a CSU school, knowing they would be able to receive a quality, low-cost education at a four-year university. The CSU system has often been looked at as a realistic alternative for many when compared to the University of California system, which is nearly twice as expensive.
