Ex-union leaders receive public pension windfall

A mysterious 1991 amendment to the Illinois public employee pension code is giving a $56 million windfall to 23 retired union officials from Chicago.

No lawmaker from either the state Legislature or Chicago government will admit to any responsibility for the passing the 20-year-old changes.

The unique law bases public pensions on the labor leaders’ union salaries, which were far more lavish than the relatively modest pay they received as city employees.
