Just over 1 million safety violations — bad brakes, defective lights, flat tires, etc. — were found during 1.2 million inspections of Mexican trucks crossing the international bridges into El Paso, Texas, between 2007 and June 2011. These statistics raise new worries just when a new bilateral agreement is allowing Mexican trucks to carry long-haul freight deep into U.S. territory. Until now, those trucks had to unload within a narrow border zone.
