An 11-year-old Virginia girl who saved a baby woodpecker from a cat brought a $535 fine upon her mother. While driving home, the family stopped at a store, bringing the boxed woodpecker inside because of the heat wave. A fellow shopper pulled out a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service badge and cited them for possession of a protected bird. Later that day the woodpecker recovered and flew away. On learning of the rescue, Fish and Wildlife canceled the fine and apologized.
