Department of Energy sends stimulus cash down tube

The U.S. Department of Energy gave West Virginia $38 million in stimulus money for home weatherization projects. Out of that, the state paid a lawyer $25,000 to write two sentences verifying that weatherization contracts had been reviewed, reportedly after only four hours of work. That is $6,250 an hour. Such waste and abuse helps explain why half of the state’s weatherized homes reinspected by DOE between September 2009 and August 2010 needed to be redone because of faulty work.
