Personal data not so private in Texas

The Texas Comptroller’s Office mistakenly posted identity information of about 3.5 million Texans — addresses, Social Security numbers, birth dates and driver’s license numbers — on its public servers. Office and the FBI are investigating why the information was not encrypted and security-protected as Texas law requires, and whether any of it was misused for identity theft.
