WHAT: A new report finds emergency food banks and pantries are becoming long-term solutions for a lot of hungry Americans.

WHY: More than half of those surveyed by the Chicago-based hunger-relief group Feeding America said they had gone to food banks anywhere from most months to every month. The group says some of those people also get food stamps, but it’s not enough.

OUTRAGE: According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 17.2 million households were considered “food insecure” in 2010. Of those, 6.4 million households had very low “food security.” Food insecurity puts children at developmental risk, which increases the likelihood of later problems with attention, learning and social interaction.
