HOW: The frontman for the deals was confessed arms trafficker A.Q. Khan, the Pakistani nuclear scientist known as “the father of the Islamic bomb.” He allegedly left a letter behind to implicate the government if he was made the fall-guy.
WHAT HAPPENED: Pressured by the U.S. over evidence of smuggled nuclear shipments, Pakistan’s intelligence agency questioned Khan in 2004. He made a confession, was pardoned and has been under house arrest ever since.
