WHAT: Leaked U.S. intelligence data reported in The New York Times charged that Pakistan’s ISI spy agency ordered the murder of reporter Saleem Shahzad, 40, to silence him.

WHY: Shahzad’s stories revealed the relationship between jihadists and the military. He was killed after writing that al-Qaida carried out the 16-hour commando attack on Pakistan’s main naval base.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: Under media pressure, Pakistan’s government established a commission to investigate Shahzad’s death. He was the 37th journalist killed in Pakistan since 9/11.
