The Daily Outrage: More valuable than a get-out-of-jail-free card

WHO: Internal Revenue Service

WHAT: Paid $39.1 million in tax refunds and nearly $50,000 in federal tax credits in 2009.

WHY IT'S AN OUTRAGE: The recipients included prison inmates who made false or fraudulent claims. Prisoners in Florida, Georgia and California alone received nearly $19 million in tax refunds. The IRS awarded $13.4 million to inmates in 2004, but nothing's changed, with amounts nearly tripling over the last five years.

WHERE TO VENT: Call the inspector general at 800-366-4484.
