WHAT: Thai police raided two Bangkok houses and rescued 14 Vietnamese women — half of them pregnant — who were being held captive with their passports confiscated. Nine persons from Taiwan, Myanmar and China were arrested for human trafficking.

HOW: A website called Baby 101 advertised complete and legal surrogacy services for $32,000 per baby, plus expenses. Offices were listed in Vietnam, Bangkok and Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The marketing was mostly targeted at customers in Taiwan.

WHY: Vietnamese women were tricked into becoming surrogate mothers by being promised $5,000 per baby. They were made pregnant by rape. The women were freed after getting an e-mail through to the Vietnamese embassy, which tipped off Thai authorities.
