WHAT: The mandatory 2009 exploration plan BP filed for the Deepwater Horizon oil rig claimed the company could handle a spill of as much as 12.6 million gallons per day — an amount 60 times more than currently estimated for the ongoing Gulf of Mexico disaster. In related documents filed with the U.S. Minerals Management Service, BP said it would be able to skim 17.6 million gallons of oil a day from the Gulf in the event of a spill.

IN REALITY: At latest count, BP reported recovering 6 million gallons of oily water since the ongoing spill began four weeks ago. But only about 10 percent of the skimmed liquid was oil, which means just 600,000 gallons have been collected. Meanwhile, satellite imagery reveals that the spill has grown to 10,170 square miles.
