WHO: Carlos A. Martinelly Montano, 23, of Bolivia, who’s an illegal immigrant, is accused of being drunk when the car he was driving killed Sister Denise Mosier in Virginia.
WHAT: The incident is the latest chapter in America’s battle with immigration, which heated up with Arizona’s controversial state law. To make matters worse, Montano had two prior convictions for drunken driving. He served no time for his first sentence of 30 days and a Prince William County judge required him to serve 20 days of his approximately one-year sentence for the second conviction.
WHY: Montano was turned over to federal immigration officials after the second incident, but he was released while he awaited hearings. The county’s Board of Supervisors chairman helped implement a policy requiring police to determine the immigration status of all people arrested on suspicion of violating state or local laws.
