In this photo provided by P.J. Hahn, dead fish are seen on the waterways at North of Point a la Hache Marina, La. on Saturday, July 10, 2010. It is unclear what killed the fish and Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries are investigating.

WHAT: So many dead fish and crabs were found on the surface of a Louisiana waterway near the mouth of the Mississippi that it looks like a rural gravel road. Gulf residents worry this may be tied to the BP oil spill.

WHY: Fish kills are not uncommon along the Gulf Coast. The area is rife with dead zones where sudden oxygen depletion can cause widespread death. But this one is much bigger than normal and was not the typical single-species die-off.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: The Plaquemines Parish president is pleading with state and federal environmental officials to investigate. However, no testing is currently promised.
