WHO: Department of Energy
WHAT: Although its website advertises methods for cutting energy use by 50 to 75 percent, the Department of Energy is evidently struggling to implement these measures. Rather than, for example, making the switch to LED lighting, many of the department’s buildings still use fluorescent bulbs.
WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: $76 million of the department’s $190 million electric bill is lighting. A recently released internal audit states that $2.2 million could be saved from more efficient lighting.
WHERE TO VENT: Call the Department of Energy at (202) 586-5000 and suggest that they take their own advice.
