Americans should exercise the right to petition government

Two-hundred and eleven years ago, the party in the White House grew frustrated with public opposition to its policies and passed a law designed to stifle dissent.

The Alien and Sedition Acts made it a crime to “print, utter or publish ... any false, scandalous and malicious writing” against the federal government, including the president.

The law was the reigning Federalist Party’s attempt to beat back an ascendant Democratic-Republican Party led by Thomas Jefferson in 1798. It backfired. An outraged American public elected Jefferson president in 1800.

No record survives as to whether the Jeffersonian protesters were well-dressed or not, but something frighteningly similar is happening today.

For the first time in a long time, the president is actively trying to suppress public involvement in civic life.
Americans have an absolute right to petition our government and express dissent. It’s right there in the First Amendment.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

President Barack Obama knows this. After all, his background is in “community organizing,” which at least sounds like it’s about encouraging people to become more involved in self-government. During the campaign, candidate Obama promised the most open and transparent government in history.

The problem is that President Obama now has a product — so-called health care reform — that is so unpopular he and his allies are being forced to quash dissent, demonize political opponents and even compile “enemies lists” just to get it passed.
White House and Democratic Party functionaries have called the concerned citizens turning up at town-hall meetings to question the wisdom of Obama’s health care plans “the mob,” “extremists” and the hapless pawns of insurance companies. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused dissenters of coming to town halls “carrying swastikas.”

And in a move clearly aimed to stifle the dissent of opponents of its health care plan, the White House issued a call this week for Americans to turn in critics of the plan. Any “disinformation” being spread around on the Internet “that seems fishy,” the White House advised, should be sent immediately to a special White House e-mail account.

The Examiner’s Byron York reported that the end result of this call for Americans to inform on their fellow citizens could be “a White House database of political opponents that will be both secret and permanent.”

The politics of hope and change have been replaced by the politics of fear and intimidation. The problem for the White House is, it won’t work.

No amount of partisan name-calling is going to make the president’s health care plan popular. And no matter how many times the White House calls it “Astroturfing,” the contentious town halls members of Congress are having back in their districts are authentic expressions of grassroots frustration and concern.

So if your member of Congress is conscientious enough — or brave enough — to schedule a town-hall meeting this August break, make sure you attend it. Be pleasant. Be positive. Stick to the facts.

And if your member of Congress is too frightened to face the public back home, make sure you call and let him or her know you expect more.

Remember: Stifling dissent and likening those who disagree with you to Nazis are not the hallmarks of a confident agenda for change.

And remember this as well: You have an absolute right to petition your government. Exercise it.

Does America not understand that at every turn Obama makes, we are losing our democratic way of life??? P.S. If Obama has a birth certificate why doesn't he just show it and prove it to the world once and for all.

America needs to open their eyes and see that if things continue in the path that the Democrats want we will lose all of our choices. They are trying to control every move that we make. They are going to have the United States in so much debt that it will take generations to come to get us out of it.

We need to continue to remind our elected officials "who put them into office" and that we can take them our and will. THEY must follow the wishes of the American People ~ not those that think they hold the power. They have their head in the sand of What About Me...Not what about AMERICA!!! We must continue to stand against them as our fore-fathers stood and make our calm voices heard! The quiet voice of true reasoning is what we need at this time...Stand up Newt!!! We need you, Mr. Speaker!

To be called an extremist, just becuase you are an educated and informed adult American with an opinon, not some idealist sheep happy to be led to slaughter, is a sin against the men and women who died for our right to express that opinion. My hope is that we have more extremist expressing their opinons every day, loudly!

Funny how liberals seem to support dissent when it serves them then call real Americans's free speach racist and compare it to Nazi's when they don't agree with it. Well, I say, forget the liberal. Keep on fighting America! This is our country, not George Sore-Oz or other like minded non-American's country.

I share the feelings of all the comments to this article. Will Mr. Gingrich please stand up and shout for us? Obama and the Democrats don't seem to be hearing us. What part of "we don't want your health care plan" don't they understand?

I am in disbelief at the turn that my America has taken since the election in January. The people were taken in by his golden tongue but I said from the very start and told my children and anyone that would listen that I could not trust this man. I said he was a claratan and liar and now the people are seeing and are scared to death of what he and his party is doing to bankrupt our country and turn us into a socialist country. Just look at his demeanor in how he represents us in foriegn meeting. Shaking hands and bowing plus apoligizing for America's actions. He is a disgrace to the office and the country. Display your flags to show your American spirit. Let everyone know that we want the Constitution and Declaration to be the law of our America.
God Bless America and keep us safe from the disaster that is going on at this time. God save America

My husband, a WWII veteran, assured me before the elections that I didn't have to fear that Obama would establish a communist regime in this country, but now he is very worried that if we don't
oppose Obama, Polosi and the rest of his team, Obama is going to succeed and this ountry will never be the same again. Mr. Gingrich, please help us. We nedd guidance to spread the word!

Newt, I think you're a racist. Where were you when your party of republicans passed the Patriot Act wich actually took away civil liberties?
I didn't ever know of you oposing the unjustified war on Iraq but your party did fabricate evidence of Weapons of mass destruction. Your article is lame too you don't even get at the facts and I think it can be labeled as gossip.

Carolyn Kluglein: Are you that blind to see that the current state of the country is because of previous administration's lame policies that have put us trillions of debt with China (to name one problem)? And yes Obama has to apologize for the U.S.of A because our country's foreign relations have economically and physically starved people to death and created countless wars accross the globe many times for profit in arms dealing and oil. And one more thing, Capitalism isn't perfect nor is it even close to the best thing for our planet, our health or our economy.
Do a little homework on the value of the dollar/the Federal Reserve and the act of 1871 if you are interested in actually understanding the mess we're in. Then offer some suggestions.

Gambit, you are clearly an idiot. Please read the CBO report before you even think about replying...that report clearly validates what has been stated. I've read it. The problem with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money--Maggie Thatcher.

Dear God, deliver us from this evil that has beset our beloved country. I thought I would never see day. Our freedoms & right to free speech are slowly being eroded. When will everyone wake up & see what's happening before we wind up a tyrannical gov't like Hitler's Germany, Stalin's Russia, Castro's Cuba? Our brave soldiers are fighting in other lands to win democracy for those peoples while we are losing ours. It is just being handed away. Please fellow Americans, stand together & fight to keep our beloved country free before its too late.

According to NewsMax.com, civil rights attorney, Van Jones, co-founder of African-Amer. political organ., Color of Change, is calling for Glenn Beck's ouster. Color Of Change claims it has pressured a growing roster of companies into pulling their ads from Beck's program: Roche, Sanofi-Aventis, RadioShack, GEICO, Progressive Insurance, Men's Wearhouse, State Farm, Sargento, Lawyers.com, and Procter & Gamble. Pres. Obama appointed Jones to serve as his so-called "green-jobs czar," in Mar. Strong arm tactics are slowly & stealthily silencing & suppressing free speech & broadcasting opposing view points other than the 'official' version the gov't wants you to know.

The DNC always has to start the name calling when people don't agree with their plans and agenda. They always have to make the opposers look like idiots, then you get the left-wing bias media to report only one side to the average American, and because if it is on the news, it has to be true. We need to boycott the "political critics" such as Jon Stewart and Bill Mahar, who are left wing a-holes who like to make jokes and make people who disagree with them look stupid. The people who really are stupid are the people who watch these types of people and believe them...THEY ARE PAID ACTORS, they started out as comedians, who the hell made them Political experts???

Its a shame that Gambit can't see all the wars that the US has prevented, all the aide we've supplied worldwide, all the change in human rights that THIS republic has brought about, all the science and innovation that have bettered life for millions AND the planet, and so many other things too numerous to mention. Perhaps Gambits glass has always been and will remain 'half-empty'. I'd just as soon have representatives who hold the glass that is half full. Newt Gingrich is not only a brilliant man, he is the shining light of true Democracy in this nation. I say "Newt Gingrich For President". Read his books and you'll say it too if you love America.

I have emailed Roche, Sanofi-Aventis, Radio Shack and Men's Warehouse about the fact that they have removed or simply shifted their ads away from Glenn Beck's program. Its my feeling that these companies should not have bowed to Van Jones. I am also going to get in touch with State Farm, Sargento, Lawyers.com, Procter & Gamble, Progressive Ins. and GEIGO for the same reason. I feel that everyone who can should do the same. Jones is trying to have Mr. Beck put off the air. We also heartily agree with Mr. Gingrich.

Only one act of the Alien and Sedition Acts remains in force - the Alien Enemies Act - is enforced in wartime. I'm not worried about these Acts, mostly expired after Adam's tenure or reversed by Jefferson. What's concerning is the persistent violation of Constitutional principles in pushing Pelosi & her Democrat cohorts to passing the likes of HR3200 (aka Health Care Reform) as federal law - giving perogative and power to a bureaucracy that hasn't existed before the swearing in of this Administration - in the personages of unelected "Czars" and un-named "Advisors". This is not grounds for measured debate - HR3200 gave no basis for a discussion of its merits. Political responses in the like of noisy town halls and political critiques from the like of Sarah Palin & Glenn Beck is appropriate for this political campaign for control.

I think it's time for the American electorate to wake up and push their "representatives" to Represent them.
