Is Obama closing GOP car dealers?

By: Mark Tapscott

There appears to be a side to the Chrysler bankruptcy that has the look of an ugly partisanship not seen in this town since Tricky Dick was in the White House composing his enemies list and checking it twice every night while watching the evening TV newscast.

Bloggers on the Right side of the Blogosphere are up in arms over data suggesting that President Barack Obama’s White House auto industry potentates are targeting for closure Chrysler dealers with records of contributing either to Republicans like Sen. John McCain or to other Democrats in the 2008 presidential primary.

Posts at RedState, Reliapundit, American Thinker, Gateway Pundit, Joey Smith and Doug Ross pointed initially at the remarkable number of closed Chrysler dealerships whose owners happen to have been contributors to Obama opponents, mainly Republicans.

But those observations were all couched with important qualifiers, particularly that all conclusions were necessarily preliminary, pending completion of a comprehensive analysis of the political contributions by all closed Chrysler dealership owners had been done and comparison of those with contributions by dealers who are not being closed.

That said, when multiple dealers who have been closed are found to have contributed millions to Republicans and mere hundreds to Obama, the serious number-crunching cannot be completed too soon.

Meanwhile, Ross seems to be ground zero for this story, and I encourage you to check out his multiple updates at http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2009/05/red-alert-did-campaign-contributions.html.

Among those updates is the one linking to a Reuters report quoting a lawyer representing dealers being closed came away from a deposition of a senior Chrysler executive with the distinct impression that the company is simply following orders coming from the White House.

“It became clear to us that Chrysler does not see the wisdom of terminating 25 percent of its dealers. It really wasn’t Chrysler’s decision. They are under enormous pressure from the president’s automotive task force,” said attorney Leonard Bellavia.

Bellavia zeroed in on the fundamental problem with Obama’s takeover of two of Detroit Big Three — something is terribly wrong when the government tells corporations who to hire and fire, what products to sell, and who will be their dealers.

“What is the next task force? Shoe stores? Pizzerias?” Bellavia said. “The problem we have is the free enterprise system is not run by the government, it’s run by business entrepreneurs. The dealers themselves will decide if it’s not productive to go forward.”

In view of these facts, when is the mainstream media going to challenge Obama to explain why he thinks he can do a better job running car companies than can the shareholders, bondholders and dealers? And where in the Constitution does it say the president has such authority in the first place?

More to the point, when is the mainstream media going to start calling what Obama is doing what it is, which at the very least is a crude kind of South American, crony statism. Given the Chicago roots of Obama and his chief of staff, the phrase used recently by The Examiner’s Michael Barone is probably most accurate — “gangster government.”

If you doubt the accuracy of Barone’s formulation, check out another recent Reuters report, this one on a recent study by the California-based bond strategist Christopher Garman. Garman compared “spreads, or bonds’ extra yields over U.S. Treasury yields, for companies with collective bargaining agreements with the high-yield bond market as a whole.”

And guess what? According to Reuters, Garman found that spreads for unionized companies were 11 percent higher in February than those without collective bargaining agreements, and the gap has remained, measuring at nine points this month.

In other words, companies that want to prosper in the anti-capitalist world Obama is creating in America will first have to make their peace with Big Labor before heading to Washington hat and checkbooks in hand to seek favor from the strong men in the White House and their enforcers in the Treasury Department and elsewhere in the executive branch.

Obama calls it “change we can believe in.” Vito Corleone called it “making them an offer they can’t refuse.”

The media is as corrupt as the black Kenyan. The founders put them in charge of riding herd over the politicians to keep them honest and now they have become a tool of the politicians. CNNABCNBCCBCMSNBC plus Time, Newsweek, the NY Slimes and the WAPO are in bed with this corrupt president.

So does anyone know if there's really something behind the suspicion of politically motivated dealership closures? This is sometehing that is far too easy for me to believe that these collectivists are doing but I want to make sure that this isn't a case of bad statistics before I start spreading the news.

Of course ugly partisanship is involved, as it is across the board with this president. Hey, look at GM ownership handed to the union (which doesn't want it.) The entire 'stimulus' is aimed at rewarding Democrats and shutting down Republicans - so bloody obvious, it goes without saying 'partisanship.' Frankly, it is a criminal enterprise.

This is why we have more honest government when Republicans are in power. No, it may not be because Republicans are more honest and ethical personally (although there is a case to be made for that), but that the media do their job under Republican adminstrations. The media hate Republicans are are always trying to dishonestly discredit them but, more important, media also are constantly doing investigative reporting. Sure, they do it on Republicans because they want to get Democrats elected in the next election cycle but we all benefit because corruption is rooted out and wrong doing exposed. The problem is that usually results in Democrats being placed in power, i.e. like today, then corruption and wrong doing goes out of control when Democrats know the media will protect them. Don't count on media looking too hard at Obama on the Chrysler closings. If they do it will be to give Obama cover by letting him give excuses as to why things went out of control.

Reply from Smokehouse, “CNNABCNBCCBCMSNBC plus Time, Newsweek, the NY Slimes and the WAPO are in bed with this corrupt president.” So true. It is time for new terminology about the news media. 1. The MSM, the mainstream media, should become the MSS, the mainstream stenographers. 2. The noun, reporter should become stenographer. 3. The term White House Press Corp should become White House Stenographers Corp. 4. News reports should become the “latest dictations”. 5. TV News Anchors, reporters, should be called dictation readers.

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2009/05/news-flash-car-dealers-are-republicans.html "Overall, 88 percent of the contributions from car dealers went to Republican candidates and just 12 percent to Democratic candidates. By comparison, the list of dealers on Doug Ross's list (which I haven't vetted, but I assume is fine) gave 92 percent of their money to Republicans -- not really a significant difference. There's no conspiracy here, folks -- just some bad math."

Least you wake up with a Horses head in bed with you. Big Brother has become a Liability not to be delt with passively. When the "Leader of the free World" an empty suit...with no leadership training.... only community organizing experience (call it rebel rousing) dictates to Corporate business exactly how to run its business, Can the same happen to Mom and Pop businesses next? He has become our... not native born....chickens on the White House Lawn... Egotistical... Castro!

The evidence is becoming overwhelming, the Kenyan intends to eliminate, or silence, his political opposition. The recent Department of Homeland Insecurity report labeling all conservatives as potential terrorists is reminiscent of Adolph Hitler. His Directive 11 ordered SS Einsatzgruppen to seek out and destroy all opposition to the Reich in conquered countries. Oppposition included possession of American books,or radio's tuned to British or Allied broadcasts( If an Einsatzgruppen Officer heard a British voice when he turned on your radio during a mandatory search of your home, you were shot immediately) or literature deemed unsupportive of the Reichs position. Other quick ticket's to a grave or a concentration camp included, American cars, cigarettes, food, electronic devices, clothes, or any other item that wasn't produced and taxed in the Reich. History offers us a template for tyranny, if we have the courage to recognize it.

The media won't report Obama's socialist b.s. because they helped get him elected. They don't want to poison their investment. Obama recently went to a Hollywood fundraiser, which raised $4,000,000 for the DNC, reportedly, where he said, "Los Angeles, you ain't seen nothing yet." What does that say about the man? Obama is riding high, not so much because he knows his policies will work, but because he knows the media is on his side, and are going to protect him with jealous fervor. Hold on tight...

This is very funny! here you have Tapscott quoting the blogs WHO ALL QUOTE each other - and all started from the SAME euters article! Now if tapscott was a bigboy journalist - instead of a lame BLOGGER, he'd make a few phone calls - or at least read the original Reuters article. So here's the prediction: this will go NO WHERE, because it's A LIE... A LAWYER - for one of the dealerships targeted for closing, is doing what LAWYERS do - he's making unfounded accusations....

I have never been in favor of the government being involved in private enterprise. Having the Government as an owner/partner in GM and Chrysler is not free enterprise, it is socialism, in ownership, and facism in dictating policy and employment. It is not fair to Ford, who has not accepted a bailout, and is now in direct competition with the federal government, the same government it will be expected to pay taxes to that in turn will be used to help it's competition. Would it be ok to tax Coca-Cola Corporation to in turn give those tax dollars to it's competitor Pepsi-Cola so that Pepsi stays in business? I think not.

Give it a break. This is all based on flawed and suspect data presented by one person with an extreme bias. What do all of you suggest? Closing the successful dealerships? What do you recommend... survival of the weakest? Stop believing this kind of short-term extreme partisanship and start trying to be a part of the long-term solution. You're all patriots, right? So go out and spend some money! Dang, buy a car from one these failing dealerships if you're really so concerned. Come on people... think for yourselves and ignore this kind of baloney.
