Obama’s pattern of intolerance toward dissent

By: Timothy P. Carney
August 8, 2009

Dissent, it turns out, is no longer patriotic. President Barack Obama’s White House and his Democratic National Committee have unleashed an all-out assault on what they call “angry,” “manufactured” and “lobbyist-funded” lies about health care reform. Look closely and you realize that’s how they classify all dissent.

Obama, when speaking at Notre Dame University last spring amid anti-abortion protests, said, “When we open up our hearts and our minds to those who may not think precisely like we do or believe precisely what we believe, that’s when we discover at least the possibility of common ground.”

But his record of dealing with actual dissent paints a different picture, one that suggests he has so much faith in his own good intentions and clever plans — and so little skepticism about the power of government to do good — that he sees all disagreement with his policies as condemnable.

“David Freddoso has made a career off dishonest, extreme hatemongering,” Obama’s presidential campaign wrote about my friend and now Examiner colleague David Freddoso last September in an effort to get a radio host to drop him.

The campaign e-mail called Freddoso a “card-carrying member of the right-wing smear machine” and said his anti-Obama book (for which I was the editor) contained “lies and smears about Barack Obama.”

The one “lie” the campaign claimed to find in the book turned out to be completely correct — that Obama “voted to raise your [taxes] if your taxable income is greater than $32,500 a year.” The Factcheck.org page the campaign cited actually proved Freddoso correct. The other “lies” they attacked were differences of interpretation.

The personal attack on Freddoso, filled with slurs and devoid of factual critiques, illuminates Obama’s current crusade against the “mobs,” “fishy e-mails” and “manufactured” dissent against his plan for massive regulations, subsidies and new government programs in the health care industry.

The White House does have a point here: Some of the protests these days are out of line. Shouting down Congress members at town halls is not practicing democracy, it’s bullying. Claiming, contrary to all evidence, that Obama is not an American citizen is not debate, but close-minded inanity — inanity possibly stemming from racism.

But Obama, through his White House, his campaign and his DNC, has lumped all dissenters in with the shouters and the birthers. There’s a political gain to this tactic, to be sure, but it certainly doesn’t reflect the open-mindedness and fairness Obama was supposed to bring.

Linda Douglass, communications director for Obama’s Office of Health Reform, said her job includes collecting “disinformation” about health care, and the White House asked Americans, “If you get an e-mail or see something on the Web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.”

What counts as “fishy”? Is it only the e-mails falsely claiming “reform” mandates euthanasia, or is Obama also counting as “disinformation” the videos displaying his past advocacy of a single-payer plan and arguments that the plan amounts to taxpayer funding of abortions?

Obama’s attack on Matt Drudge for posting those videos, the White House’s broad dismissal of town-hall protests as “mobs” of “manufactured” dissent and his DNC’s intentional conflation of health care protesters with birthers suggests that anything rejecting the White House’s conclusions on health care counts as “fishy,” or worse, and must be reported to authorities.

Obama’s White House and his DNC have repeatedly said “special interests” oppose reform because they “profit from the status quo.” (Obama doesn’t name anyone, because, awkwardly, the drugmakers and health insurers are lobbying for “reform” and buying television ads supporting the general idea.)

But has Obama ever acknowledged that most of the people who oppose his proposed reform do so because they believe it economically harmful, wasteful, unconstitutional, immoral or damaging to families?

The DNC suggests that all town-hall dissidents are “funded by K Street lobbyists.” This is an odd line of attack coming from the DNC, considering the DNC and its House and Senate campaign committees have already brought in more than $1 million from lobbyists and $629,000 from the drug industry.

One could fairly call Obama’s DNC a special-interest group funded by K Street lobbyists advancing policies for political gain that profit drugmakers and insurers — but that might be deemed “fishy.”

Yes, President Obama is the man who claimed to be a healer, but appears to be the complete opposite. He is also quick to blame the Republicans or ex-president George Bush for anything that goes wrong. Apparently he comments show that he sorely lacks leadership skills that our country needs.

Perhaps Democrats should take a page from George W. Bush's play book and only invite only carefully vetted people for these town halls.

The transparency that the Democrats are promoting seems to be backfiring on them since they have to realize that dirty republican politics have no limits to the extent they will go.

Fox news is instigating these mobs and we all know how uniformed the general public is on most matters that are vital to the nation.

As far as the issue of 'tax-payer funded abortions' I say this: if you already have private coverage through your employer, chances are you already subsidize abortions for other members on your plan. I know that my plan, for one, covers elective abortions. I'd ask that people stop and think about that and drop the outrage that their tax money will fund abortions... your paycheck already does.

Like all 'good' advertising, candidate Obama was sold as sizzle, not steak. And enough people at the time read into Obama whatever they fancied, so he was elected.

With every passing post-election month though, more people are finding out that with president Obama there's no steak coming, in terms of after-Bush federal cost savings and policy improvements -- just a trillion-dollar-plus piece of nasty gristle.

While I object to any takeover of any private industry, I fully support government funded abortions. We have decided to pay for everything for anyone as long as they are breathing, so less persons breathing is a good thing.

While Democrats preach acceptance and decry negative politics, they regularly act in exactly the opposite way. They cannot stand to have their lies and bullying tactics exposed so they send out their minions in the press and goons from the ranks of their supporters to stifle free speech.

American needs to stand up to these Democrat bullies lest they continue to lead the country to decline.

"Perhaps Democrats should take a page from George W. Bush's play book and only invite only carefully vetted people for these town halls."

Interesting charge. Completely non-factual, of course. There's no evidence of anyone being turned away from a Bush-era town hall meeting, but that doesn't stop the Obamanation from making the charge every time they get caught astroturfing or stacking meetings with union goons.

natmcnasty sez: "...so less persons breathing is a good thing."

The attitude reflected in that statement is tha attitude of euthanasia. State (We The People) subsidized abortion has turned us into a nation of well-dressed, well-fed, luxury-loving monsters.

"Perhaps Democrats should take a page from George W. Bush's play book and only invite only carefully vetted people for these town halls."

That would be a step up from inviting union members to show up and attack and intimidate, as the democrats seem to be doing now.

Who are the "birthers"?

Last year during the Georgia/Russia contretemp I followed the issue quite closely on a number of sites. Of a sudden a flood of commenters not seen before showed up to defend the Russians. They used expressions that were distinctly non-American, e.g., "bombing" instead of "shelling" by artillery. Everybody caught on pretty quickly and started addressing them as "comrade". Birthers? Maybe KOS Kidz.

The reason dissent has turned into shouting matches is that the administration and congress have decided they are not interested in what the public desires, but wish to ram through their unvetted legislation without a thorough public debate. Now there is even talk of presenting the legislation in the senate as a budgetary bill so they can pass it with only 51 votes instead of the customary 60 needed for bills like this. This is the Chicago way I guess. When democratic rules get in the way of your agenda, throw out the rules...

Obama's "snitch list" is simply a slap across the face of Lady Liberty.

The very notion of Americans "snitching" on their neighbors is very distasteful. This is the type of behavior displayed in a Banana Republic, in Iran, in Germany circa 1935 - 1945.

Does not matter if Obama has best of intentions or Obama intends to create a Nixonian enemies list. The very principle of a snitch list is not in keeping with our way of life. Patriotic Americans do not engage in snitching on others for wrongful thinking or wrongful words.

This snitch list is an embarrassment to America.

American Indians are among the most patriotic of Americans. While visiting the Zuni Nation in N.M there was a letter in the Code Talkers Museum from the Chief of the Zunis during WWII. It said, "any Zuni male who did not volunteer for the armed services to fight for this country, would no longer be considered a Zuni." Bianca Cox

Those of us old enough to remember Hitler's "Brownshirts" believe we see their regeneration in ACORN and its soulmate, the SEIU. Last night at a health care townhall, a black man selling "Don't tread of Me" flags was assaulted and called the "N-word" by a black man wearing an SEIU shirt; caught on videotape. Be very afraid Americans!

Paul, your ignorance on the abortion issue is staggering. One has A CHOICE when choosing which plan and private insurer to go with, and for that matter which employer, when considering abortion funding. But if government is going to be the insurer WE HAVE NO CHOICE. ALL OF OUR TAX DOLLARS WILL FUND ABORTION. My insurance DOES NOT COVER ABORTIONS. What is truly outrageous is that the "PRO-CHOICE" crowd actually espouses less choice, less freedom and no debate!

...one more thing: citizens are indeed organizing. They are organizing against a massive take-over of one-sixth of our economy and of our entire medical system. Obama is forcing the issue, decrying debate and shutting down questions, having not read, by his own admission, house bill hr3200, a 1000 page monstrosity. The fact that the senate has yet to put forth a bill is not comforting, the Democrats do not seem interested in meaningful debate or of any of the bills put forth by Republicans, but of rubber-stamping anything Obama wants. I doubt Paul has read the house bill. He would be alarmed. Organizing was wonderful when Obama did it but now it's a bad thing? I think not.

The ignorance of the commenters on this post is truly mindblowing. You are right to panic though, you will be an increasingle small minority as more of the old, white, racist generation dies. Oh, and healthcare reform is a done deal. We don't need the GOP to pass it. Choke on that while your brain swims with delusional conspiracy theories.

Dissent IS the highest form of patriotism. Obama's is just another New World Order puppet. Once people stop looking to Presidents and look to who is REALLY in control, then and only then do we have any real chance of taking our country back.

By the way, did you guys hear abotu FEMA NLE 09? Training foreign troops on U.S. soil? Unfortunately I feel Martial Law is right around the corner and they will use the H1N1 flu to get it started.

Do your homework people!

The neocons hate everything Presidnet Obama do or say. They will not give him a break and do not like him because he's African American. I keep asking and get nothing from the neocons. What's is your soultion to health care? Nothing but keep being the party of no and the party of only white people who do not want minorities to advance or be in any postion of power.

Obama is getting caught in too many lies. Let's not even include all of the "most transparent presidency ever" and "new era of post-partisanship" and "cut the debt in half" obvious falsehoods. People were still in Obama euphoria / quasi-campaign mode then and didn't pay much attention.

But the new whoppers like "increase competition by using a single-payer system" and "reduce health care costs by adding a trillion dollars" and "you can keep your existing insurance when the bill explicitly phases it out" are starting to catch the attention of more and more Americans, despite the best efforts of his built-in extended old-Pravda-like press core (NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, NY and LA Times).

If you haven't done so already, WAKE UP EVERYBODY! OBAMA IS A FRAUD! THESE PLANS WILL BANKRUPT OUR COUNTRY!

Well, Amen! The whole concept of bailing out institutions which made bad bets introduces moral hazard; it merely encourages them to engage in even more risky behavior. What with the bailout, the stimulus package, and a $1.8 trillion deficit, the federal government is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.
