Metro Theatre on path toward reuse

After three years of being shuttered, the Metro Theatre on Union Street is on the path toward being reopened as a high-end gym with retail shops.

The full Board of Supervisors will vote Tuesday on making the building’s exterior a landmark, while leaving the interior features un-landmarked.

The developer said it was his intent to preserve key features of the theater’s interior, but did not want any of them officially landmarked to allow for more flexibility as construction plans moved forward.

The future of the large theater was locked up in a political battle for years. Now it seems everyone is ready to turn the page.
