See’s Candies vacates Union Square

Next time you’re at Union Square and are just dying for some peanut brittle, get ready for a shocker:  See’s Candies, which for years has provided a chocolaty outpost in one of the kiosks in the plaza, could not meet city demands and left Union Square.

See’s originally leased the kiosk from the San Francisco Parks Trust, but the kiosk was later transferred to The City, said Rich Hillis, deputy director of Recreation and Parks.

After it changed hands, See’s lease came up, at which point The City discovered that See’s was not providing all of the same benefits for domestic partners that it does for spouses – something The City requires of all companies it does business with.

See’s declined to change its policy and the lease was not renewed, Hillis said. The last candy morsel was vacated from the premises June 5.

To fill the space, The City is allowing Emporio Rulli, the vendor that rents the kiosk on the Stockton Street side of the square, rent the old See’s space for the next three years. Owner Gary Rulli plans to use that space to sell Italian pastries and hand-roasted coffees, and at lunch, serve panini sandwiches with fresh soups or salads.

So peanut brittle is out, but maybe you can console yourself with some biscotti and espresso.

How much you wanna bet See's supported Prop 8.

Does this mean all See's stores will be banned from SF? If the kiosk violates policy why should the other retail stores get away with it?

I've worked at See's Candy, and know for a fact that they DO provide domestic partner benefits. This story cannot be right.

i also work for See's and know that they allow domestic partnership. maybe because they require you to do it legally, is the problem. but i know i could get medical, vision, health, etc for my partner

I spoke with a representative of See's Candy (just dial their customer service number, 800-895-7337, press 3, and ask to speak to someone about the closing of the Union Square store). She was happy to read me a press release from the company CEO stating that this article is factually untrue, and that they do offer DPB's to union/non-union workers, but that the city was going to require further benefit changes that would in turn require union contract re-negotiation. Now, I don't know anything about union contracts, I'm not defending See's, but at least according to See's themselves, they're more than willing to explain that they willingly offer full DPB (including health insurance). Call them up and ask them yourself, if you have questions.

So what is the truth on this? What See's says or what the Examiner says?

Jul 7, 2009

If See's is not providing identical benefits to domestic partners and married couples, they are violating state law, not just city regulations. They need to be made to obey state law. Someone please sue them if this story is correct. If it is not, then please retract the story and apologize to them.

Jordan, See's does not provide the same benefits to DPs as it does to married couples. You got played by their PR department.

The point in the article is that See's does not provide domestic partner benefits that are equivalent to those for married partners. Not that See's does not provide domestic partner benefits at all. But how disappointing to know this about See's. There's a lot of good chocolate around, and I'd like to buy from a local company, but this is one more reason not to.

Sees was once a locally-owned company, but since 1972 they're owned by the conglomorate Berkshire Hathaway, the CEO of which is billionaire Warren Buffett.

See's sent me a copy of their press release. They call Katie Worth a liar and ask The Examiner for a retraction. But then they confirm the facts of the story! When I spoke to See's, "Jessica" was surprised to learn that the letters were on the web and hastily referred me for a callback from a manager. (http://ca-ripple-effect.blogspot.com/2009/07/sees-candies-letters-show-noncompliance.html). Until See's issues a believable explanation, we need to put them on the same list with Exxon/Mobil, Bolthouse Juice and the Salvation Army. Shame.

Hey, We all have our own thoughts and ideals of how we see things... And we all never agree with each other .. So if you want good candy go to See's. If you have a problem with Domestic Partners.. I prefer the Gay word,,,Then move on, I for one am G and have no issue with See's Choosing to stick to there guns. So What!!! I"M bigger than that.
