It may be another year before the San Francisco Unified School District implements a new student assignment process, but district officials still want help narrowing down a list of assignment simulations so they can pick the right one.
The eight simulations released last month range from a limited choice option that would mean children attend a school close to home to a complete choice option much like the current system, which doesn’t assign students based on geography.
The ad hoc committee will meet this evening at James Denam Middle School to weigh some of the possibilities.
Special Assistant Superintendent Orla O’Keeffe said the eight presented in April aren’t the final set of options.
The district continues to gather data related to demographics, O’Keeffe said. What’s more, the upcoming census will give school officials a better understanding of the number families in The City and more current information about where they live.
The district’s new strategic plan and the introduction of a new superintendent as well as five new board members all contributed to delays in the moving the redesign process ahead. Officials hope a new assignment system will be in place for the 2011-12 school year, O’Keeffe said.
