San Francisco using state funds to tackle auto insurance fraud

A statewide effort to crack down on auto insurance fraud will provide San Francisco with more funds than expected to employ investigators and trial attorneys to help The City prosecute fraudsters.

District attorneys in California arrested 748 people on suspicion of defrauding auto insurance companies of more than $11 million during the 2007 – 2008 financial year.

San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris had expected to receive $145,200 from California’s Automobile Fraud Insurance Program to help pay the salaries and benefits of anti-auto fraud officials this year.

But California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner on Sept. 15 told Harris in a letter that San Francisco had been awarded $250,000 for the program this year.

The City will receive $136,000 in subsequent years, Poizner said.

The Board of Supervisors’ City Operations and Neighborhood Services Committee is scheduled to recommend approval of the grant on Monday.

The police and DA investigators do the investigations and make the arrest not the deputy DAs. A $145.000.00 might cover the cost of one investigator per year or if she breaks the money up and uses it to pay for overtime. It's a lot of money but in the big picture of investigating crimes it really isn't. The DAs are responsible for charging the crimes in court.

I hope Poizner's office will be monitoring the DA's expenditures. It was just recently that the DA's office was billing the federal governement for work that they didn't do!
